One of my UD agents is asking to be registered when I try to run it. This happened after a computer crash which I suspect was caused by an intermittent RAM failure. The agent was originally registered in April 2006 (device name DCH-GRID29).
Can one of the Techs explain what might have happened please? If I try to register it again with the same device name will I get in an even worse mess? Thanks, David. |

You may want to reinstall it in case anything else was corrupted.
But sure, go ahead and register it. You don't need to worry about the name, although it makes the different devices hard to tell apart in the WCG device manager. |

Hello davidhobbs,
----------------------------------------If I try to register it again with the same device name will I get in an even worse mess? I think that Retsof has stated that he has renamed the old devices in such cases. (to Old001, etc., just to keep things unconfused) Each new registration is given a unique ID number by the server, so the server is never confused. Hello davidhobbs, Yes, that works well in case I have a sentimental name that I want to keep for the active device. If I try to register it again with the same device name will I get in an even worse mess? I think that Retsof has stated that he has renamed the old devices in such cases. (to Old001, etc., just to keep things unconfused) Each new registration is given a unique ID number by the server, so the server is never confused. Lawrence Once this is done, check all devices ever registered to make sure that there are no DUPLICATE names. That can cause problems. If you find a duplicate, simply rename one, preferably before sending in more workunits.

Ah,
Actually I have lots of duplicate names because over the years I have renamed failed devices "defunct". Since these devices will never download or return work (since they no longer exist) I presume this does not cause a problem. David. |

I'm surprised you managed to save them all with the same name 'defunct'. You can create/register devices with a duplicate name though, but in the device manager it should not be possible to re-save them after making a change unless renamed to a unique one. Suggest you all rename them to defunct-01, defunct-02 etc

Hello davidhobbs,
----------------------------------------Not a problem. The server is using uniquely assigned numbers to keep track of the UD clients. The humanly readable computer ids are just for humans. Lawrence Added: I think that United Devices ran into problems in the early days and switched to this method well before WCG adopted their software. If I am wrong and duplicate device names can cause problems, please correct me. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 1, 2007 9:32:44 AM] |
