Hey folks.
----------------------------------------I run a heavily-partitioned Windows XP system, because, well, I like the organization a bit better and it helps with things like disk fragmentation, disk scans after crashes, et cetera. The general scheme is that I've got an 8 GiB C: partition, a 10 GiB partition for program installation, and then other stuff (1 GiB for Java programs, 20 for music, and the rest is in a general-purpose "Docs" drive.) It's a generally loose structure, when all is said and done. This leads to a problem with WCG: under "storage performance," the reference system offers 5GB; whereas mine offers a little under 1 GB! I have more available physical memory than hard drive space for this program -- that seems weird to me. Well, I've got a lot more free space on my other than that on other drives, including my programs partition; but it seems like it's just looking in C: and allocating there by default. Some questions: - Does the UD agent use the extra space of the reference system, or not? That is, will I actually be helping the project in any way by ensuring that it gets more than 1 GB of hard disk space? - If so, how can I configure it to use the space on another partition? I have a *lot* more than 1 GB available; it's just not on the C drive. Also, the default config is only using up about ~60% of my CPU time according to Process Explorer; how do I donate the remaining ~40%? Let me make the dilemma a bit smaller. The 5gb or 10gb settings in the UD profile are only there to shore up the device rating. It is never ** used. The largest job we had demanded 2gb storage (help defeat cancer). Given that actually best portion of the job uses the swap file, which you likely also have running in a separate partition, you probably are okay to install in a 1-2gb drive.
----------------------------------------The space on another drive can be used by moving the WCG program to that partition and changing the shortcut in the Windows Autostart folder and menu (before exit the agent). ** Users of the UD monitor add in (3rd party, none WCG) need to add space for storage of the work units slots. Take each slot as about 10mb. As for the CPU, if you want to give ti more speed, get the http://worldcommunitygrid.org/files/WCGridMaxCPU.exe tool. It's a slider for running between 25 to 100%. Added: As to where to set the storage space: My Grid > Device Manager > Device Profile of Choice and drop-down box select, then save. The setting will take effect on the next opportunity the UD agent communicates with the server. Added: image ![]()
