Pack main programme

I just decided to switch from UD to Boinc and first thing what i see is the download of 15MB (!) hpf main programme. I'm a dialup user so it is important for me. The programme can be packed by gzip, for example, the size will be around 4MB. Why it wasn't done?
Thank you.

Re: Pack main programme

Downloads are compressed. Are you looking at the uncompressed size, perhaps?

If you are using a very old version of BOINC, then it is incapable of dealing with compression - but if you just installed it, that shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Pack main programme

Hello SergK,
BOINC reports the uncompressed size of programs and files. But the downloads are compressed.

What You 'See' Is Not What You Get (WYSINWYG)

I'm working on a table to provide the file size info. Since the Application is one-time it's not an extreme concern, though they are pre-compressed. In fact, HFP2 is compressed by itself regardless the version of BOINC.

knreed explained it somewhere. What you would see of compressed versus uncompressed is that the Message log reports different download speeds.... the compressed files give much higher values. With 5.8.16 uploads are also compressed, with 5.4.11 only the downloads. Here a draft of the matrix without the science app info:

Added: The servers check which client is connecting and depending on version sends compressed files 'on the fly' or uncompressed files.

Re: Pack main programme

Reporting uncompressed sizes is perfectly normal - some transport layers rely on it.

Did you know that loads of web pages are quietly zipped up without you ever knowing or caring?
