sad HELP!!!

My computer crashed! Ok, this is not WCG related, but more about Windows XP SP2 crashing... ok. Here's the problem. SP2 needs the file "ntoskrnl.exe" usually found in C:\WINDOWS\System32. Good. However, in that folder, there is not ntoskrnl.exe! My computer can't boot! I've already tried MS-DOS, and I can't find it anywhere! My comp's as good as dead! Also, I can't do a fresh reinstall of Windows XP, cuz there are files in there that I can't back up yet! You can help me by if you have SP2 installed on your computer, copy that file into an email and send it to me. I need to replace that ntoskrnl.exe if I ever want my computer to even run! Please help me... crying crying crying
Oh, by the way, the reason I can still barely use this computer is through SaFe Mode and connecting through that, using a SP2 upgrade disk... my computer is on the verge of collapse! sad sad sad

Re: HELP!!!

jujaga --

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 and find that there are several additional copies of ntoskrnl.exe on my system. The one in C:\WINDOWS\System32 is 2130 KB and is dated 8/4/2004 1:20 AM. I find additional copies of the same size and date in the following directories: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386, C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp2.cab, and C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\sp2.cab. There are also copies of two previous versions of that file in other directories that are of different sizes and dates. Check to see if you are able to locate the file in those directories on your system to recover it. If you do not find it, go to my team website (click the link in my signature line below to get there) and open my name on the team member list to get my e-mail address and send me an e-mail and I will attach the file to an e-mail back to you.

Update at 3:47 AM EST: It looks like our team website is presently down. Hopefully our team captain, David Autumns, will get it back up shortly. If it is not up by about 8:00 AM when I expect to actually get up for the day (this is just one of my nocturnal visits to the PC and the forums -- LOL) and you have to have the file e-mailed to you, let me know here and we can figure out another way to exchange e-mail addresses.

Re: HELP!!!

You could always pull the HD with the defective install out, set it as slave, and put it into another comp to back the data up with. Then reformat the hardrive and reinstall windows. Take the HD with the backed up data and put it into your computer as a slave and get your data back. You could also do this over a network to save you one HD swap. (This is all asuming the second HD is big enough.)

Next time don't delete random system files. :)

Re: HELP!!!

You can try to do an install of Windows again. When you boot off of the CD, it should see the existing Windows install and overwrite the files that are already there and copy the ones that are not.

If this, works, you can then install SP2.

biggrin Re: HELP!!!

Yay! I'm back! Oh, to bring everyone back up to date with my status (including me), yes I found some extra ntoskrnl.exe , but not to any avail, for when I tried to fix it with those extras, I lost my computer completely. I had to use System Recovery on my computer (I use a OEM version of Windows XP SP1) (not the destructive recovery) and I got it working just enough to back up everything! Yay! Then, I wiped out everything (this time it was Destructive) and got it in pristine condition, restored everything, and now, I'm back, not with all the programs, but with enough for normal operation. Currently, I'm getting everything I missed installed and configured, and lastly, I would like to mention, when I was backing up, I copied the WCG directory and when I installed WCG after the wipeout, I restored the WCG directory that I backed up (by the way. it was in the middle of a work unit), and to my surprise, I never had to log in, and it just continued to work on that work unit! It was beyond my expectations! It just continued like nothing ever happened! I believe this could be of some use to the WCG admin, because, for some reason, just editing the internals of the WCG (as in just copying and pasting) allowed it to continue seamlessly. Anyways, that's what's going on... see ya around... wink biggrin
Oh, by the way, I don't have enough money to buy another hard drive, after all, I am only a fourteen year old... wink

Glad to see you made it back! That was pretty amazing that WCG was able to pick up where it left off as if nothing happened. With all the skill you are showing as a fourteen year old, I am sure that it won't be too very long until money for a hard drive won't be a problem for you.

biggrin Re: HELP!!!

Thanks for all the positive comments, I really appreciate it. smile Currently, the work packet is like at 80% and I had it continue at 14% after copying it... it is kinda running a bit slower than usual, but then again, more points, and this is after all just a copy over from wiping out windows and reinstalling literally everything... I should see a big point boost soon... wink See ya all crunching! biggrin
Oh, by the way, everything that I have backed up is restored, except for my games on cd... biggrin

The large WUs that some of us have been seeing mean that we shouls all see a big points boost! (30 hours gone and only at 23.1% !)

Oh, by the way, everything that I have backed up is restored, except for my games on cd... biggrin

But games slow down the crunching effort ! biggrin
biggrin Don't do it!
