*terribly sorry that this is probably in the wrong forum, but it's 3:20am and I'm tired*
Is there a version of the BOINC client, or something that can still report to WCG, that runs as a PHP, Python, Ruby, or other web programming language? I do not have a dedicated server, but I have a lot of shared & (gs) Grid Servers that I could easily utilize for this project if it could run somehow through any of those methods. From my recent Google searches all I could find regarding web servers is running a statistics tracker. I appreciate all replies (even if you want to call me a bum for posting a possibly stupid question at 3 in the morning). |

Don't worry, but the expert took a healthy sleep and will respond in a while.
----------------------------------------For the moment, have not stumbled over a case like yours before. BOINC is open source and can be compiled onto many operating systems, BUT, the sciences still need to run in their precompiled state and run only on Windows, Linux MAC Intel+PPC. stand by.

ALright after this I'm going to sleep...
So basically I could possibly compile the client to work somehow, maybe even by translating it, but the actual projects then would not work because they require more than just the client to run... right I guess I didn't think of that. That's too bad, I would love to give all this idle power to WCG :( I give 100% of my MacBook Pro for about 8-20hrs a day but it doesn't seem to be helping that much (only 2,000 points after 2 days). |

Oh dear. The answer is NO!
Actually, it is quite easy to run BOINC on shared web servers, and no nonsense about PHP versions of BOINC is required. If you have shell access, you can do what you like. But the bottom line here is that the idle time isn't yours to give. Check your service agreement, and you will find CPU, disk and memory limits, and probably limits concerned with how long page requests may execute. In short, shared web servers aren't suitable for crunching. |

I just read the AUP for my (mt) Grid Server, and it seems that the only thing that would be unacceptable is by "far outstripping the allotted resources". I'm going to contact them to inquire further, and if the response is good (maybe possibly hopefully) I'd like to know more. But for now, thanks for all your help.

Ah, Media Temple. I wasn't familiar with it.
----------------------------------------But two minutes with the FAQ found this: "Each (gs) Grid-Service plan is given 1000 GPUs monthly, which is equivalent to continuously using 10% of a processor core for one month." 10% of one core? Not really cost effective for BOINC, I think. edit: Also, they would suspend your account almost immediately, to avoid sending you a hosting bill the size of the budget deficit. Finally, it looks like your hosting provider doesn't provide shell access, making the solution I suggested difficult to impossible. I have shell access. The rply I received from the grid's manager told me that it'd be fine if I did, but he didn't recommend it until they make a container for WCG (which apparently they're working on, but no word if it will actually make it into production). I think the main reason I'd like to use it is because it runs continuously, since my laptop I only can run it from 12am to 10am. Thanks anyway, Didactylos. :)

It's great to hear that they are into donating time for a humanitarian project like WCG. A grid like theirs must have a fairly awesome capacity, and in off peak times, a lot of it will be idling.
But please bear in mind the cost. I would hate for you to get hit with a crazy hosting bill. |
