Hello Techs and/or Community Advisors:
Before upgrading I have a few questions. Current OS - Windows XP CPU - Pentium 4 - 3.0 GHz 2.99 GHz 2.0 RAM Running BONIC 5.8.16 1) Running about 1.5 months all valid results, do I need to upgrade, what are the advantages, i.e. will work units run quicker, will results be more valid? 2) If I upgrade do I need to uninstall 5.8.16 or can I upgrade 5.10.7 over current version. 3) Should I stop current version before running upgrade. 4) What happens to current work units if I upgrade. 5) If it isn't broke why upgrade. Thanks for any input dseto |

1) No need at all. 5.10 has a few new features, a few bug fixes, lots of enhancements. But it's just a minor update. Leave it a while and update when you're ready. The science applications aren't affected at all by this. WCG deploy new and updated science applications automatically - they download with the work units.
2) You can install over it. 3) The installer does that for you. 4) No work is lost if you install BOINC into the same folder as before. 5) See (1). |

Does it fix the problems I've been having with Vista Home premium?
I've had errors (shutdown time on Vista was too quick, fixed with WaitToKill.reg set at 20000). I've had non-communications with the project servers (fixed with ca-bundle.crt certificate which was missing). |

The install option is there to still put it outside the C!\Program Files\ structure. It's supposedly better co-existing, but what makes it, I've not found out.
----------------------------------------Just added a point 6 to the Vista How To post.... DEP does play a roll in Vista as it is by default ON. The 'ca-bundle.crt' issue I'd not associated before with a windows install problem. Thought this to be a Linux exclusive. Can you point me to your post where this was discussed as I'd like to add it to the Vista How To post. thanks

Sekerob, here's the link to the thread:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=14222 Here's also the thread itself if the link doesn't work: "BOINC error: "Scheduler request failed: problem with the SSL CA cert (path? access rights?)" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a known problem with some ported BOINC releases, especially the FreeBSD port and certain Linux x64 ports. The reason for the error is that a file (ca-bundle.crt) was omitted from the release. If you see this error message in your message log, then you probably need to apply this fix. Determine your BOINC data directory. Check the beginning of your message log. There will be a line near the beginning like this: 08/06/2007 13:18:00||Data directory: C:\Program Files\BOINC Download the missing file. You can get it from here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/browser/trunk/.../ca-bundle.crt?format=raw - make sure you name the file ca-bundle.crt. Place the file in your BOINC data directory. Restart BOINC. The way you do this will depend on your installation. Why does this problem only affect WCG, and not other BOINC projects? This is because WCG is (at the time of writing) the only BOINC project that requires a secure connection to the server. Other projects permit falling back to an insecure connection." This only applies to third party releases of BOINC. If you get BOINC from WCG or from Berkeley, then you should not have this problem.

Believe it or not, that's where I got it from, Berkeley's BOINC website. I know of some 3rd party sites that offer BOINC downloads but never tried or visited them. It seems to be working fine for now.

Hi keiko01,
----------------------------------------Surely it was a clean install (Vista), as an upgrade would leave the previous certificate in place (?).... now that is something to report over at BOINC dev forum. Need to have a look with an unzipper, if the file is in the distro. Here the report: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=1909&nowrap=true#11161
