Re: Interaction between BOINC and power management.

I'm sorry, twisted0n3 - BOINC is the last thing I would blame for power saving failing to kick in. My first thought would be pets, small children, (dare I say it - a significant other) or even fluff in the mouse. Can you rule out any of these possibilities?

"Wait for it not to work" is a bit vague for a bug report, and if this was BOINC specific, I would expect to see more reports of the problem. So far, you seem to be the only one affected.

If you want to take this further, I think you will have to log the times that this problem occurs, together with the work unit running at the time, and any other information you think is pertinent, such as your hardware setup and any other programs that are running.

Finally, does this problem still occur when you aren't using the BOINC screensaver?

Re: Interaction between BOINC and power management.

Hello again,
I was able to find some time to play around with BOINC and see if I could duplicate any problems with screensaver modes. At the time of trying I was running FAAH on one of the cores, so that is what the screensaver showed. I set the BOINC screensaver to start after 5 min, then modified my power savings to turn off the monitor after 10 min. I tried several times and it worked every time. I am not sure if the screensaver and monitor power off were to the second, I didn't get that exact, but it was within the minute. I am on a laptop, not sure if that would have any bearing, I wouldn't think so, but just thought I would mention it.
I then set my defaults back to no screensaver (the pretty graphics don't mean a whole lot to me) and for Windows to turn off my monitor after 5 min of inactivity. So far so good.
Also, I have BOINC running 100% on both cores and have my profile set to run always.
I have seen instances where my screensavers and/or power saving features didn't kick in when they were supposed to, but I don't think I was even running WCG then. The only way I could get the monitor to turn off was to do it manually or hope it would do it by itself. I was running XP, probably Professional (it's been so far back I can't remember) and I could not get it to work properly. I just gave up and lived with it. Later on down the road I re-installed Windows and Voila! It worked normally again. Nothing different about the re-install or the software installed either. Everything the same. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
I'll post if I find anything else out.

Re: Interaction between BOINC and power management.

Apparently Windows plays much better with ACPI than APM.

Here is another page I found:

Hope this helps.

Re: Interaction between BOINC and power management.

Thanks for your efforts and research joneil003. I've been unable to replicate either even when I tried to set the sequences in the wrong order. It must be an extreme rare combination of hardware/software. Didactylos has already laid out what We/WCG require to take this further. Without that, it's a dead end.
