I've been running the UD agent crunching HCMD stuff for the last few weeks having converted from the grorg meltdown, and I've been getting an "agent paused" message all day. Blahblahblah/cause.html doesn't really help and there appears to be no notice saying "project complete."
So - what's going on? Anyone else have this problem, or is it just me? Sure - I've seen other references to a similar occurrence, but that was some weeks ago, the problem appeared to have been resolved and there's no apparent mention of this new (to me) halt to proceedings. Cycles going to waste here.... |

So - what's going on? Anyone else have this problem, or is it just me? There was a known server issue that was resolved: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=13708 Currently, it is a few minutes past the member statistics gathering at 1200 UTC. I have seen the server act busy for a while during that time. A similar phenomenon could happen at member/team statistics time at 0000 UTC. How is it now? Did you get a new workunit? I can't say whether anyone else had the problem unless they chime in here. Unfortunately the pure UD process is serial. After a workunit is finished, it is time to demand another one. If there is a problem on this end, you wait. UDMonitor is an add-on product that can cache several workunits for UD. It takes a bit of babysitting to make it all work. It was originally written for grid.org, but works here by merely starting it with the WCG bat file. You just have to tell it where UD is. Unfortunately (again), if you can't get one workunit, you certainly can't get 10 at the moment. BOINC is the current way to go to make the process as painless as possible. Most of the time, I have 2-4 days worth of workunits waiting, and don't really care about small server burps. The other "on the other hand" is that the current phase of HCMD is only set up on the UD version. If that's "your cause", UD.EXE is the only one running it. They didn't have time to set it up on BOINC before turning it loose. If there's a next phase, it would probably be set up in both versions. You also might check another project in the meantime, to see whether it is a problem there with only HCMD, or whether you can't get anything. Please post your numerical Device ID and time of the problem and the techs may be able to comment.

HCMD is coming to an end (for this phase at least). So if you are only working on HCMD, then it is almost certainly a lack of work.
A few more units may be sent out over the next days/weeks to finish off the last batch, but I suspect it's fundamentally complete - the techs loaded the last batch some time ago. So, as retsof says, select a few other projects, and see if that solves your problem. |

OK - device ID is 573794.
I first noticed the problem 11 hours ago, and it's continuing. The cycles aren't actually going to waste. I've got a little stack of neatly-folded proteomes (whatever they may be) here and the odd compared genome or three. My major interest is HCMD however - and the time that would have been dedicated to that project is being placed elsewhere, not advancing that particular project. It would be nice to know if the project has finished, or entered the wind-down stage so we can be sure that there's no problem. As it is, it's worrisome to me since no-one else seems to have mentioned it. OTOH, if there's no more work for this stage, then that's BRILLIANT because it means the scientists can get working on the data returned and get moving on the next stage.... (whatd'ya mean "they need to sleep...?") |

Here's the thread in the HCMD project area talking about project length:
----------------------------------------https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=13569 "winding down" is mentioned. They also link to the Decrypthon site and/or Forum. It's in French, but their graphics shows something like 97% of the proteins sent out as of whenever the graph was made. Phase II may start in July, but it would depend on what HCMD learns from phase I. They could always tweak it. The cycles aren't actually going to waste. I've got a little stack of neatly-folded proteomes (whatever they may be) here and the odd compared genome or three. So, your computer has something to do? It's just not getting anything if you check HCMD ONLY? At this late stage, I'd stay with multiprojects.BOINC has a different wrinkle that cuts down on these kinds of problems. If and when HCMD Phase II is introduced to BOINC, there's a box to check to send other work if the checked project(s) don't have any. It has saved me a couple of times. I checked one project. When I started getting other stuff, I looked at the read-only news at the top. Some workunits were bad and needed to be recalled. Nothing was going out. Also check the HCMD (or whatever) project area. I can see that it is going to be timely especially now.

The final batch started crunching on 30th May, and was estimated to last about 20 days. However, HCMD has been given a higher priority recently, so it is possible we have reached the end earlier than expected.
Anyway, I tried getting HCMD work, and none was available. Therefore, I think we can say conclusively that the queue has run dry. As I said earlier, there will be a slow trickle of extra units sent out to compensate for results that aren't returned, but it appears all the work has now been sent out. I expect a tech to confirm this shortly. Well done for spotting it before anyone else! |

Retsof, that's not quite accurate. The HCMD scientists say that phase 2 will require major changes, so it probably won't launch until next year.
But we have plenty of other projects coming up to keep us busy until then! |

My client on pure HCMD diet is still getting them....uninterrupted, with durations varying from long to extra long. The machine that is on a GC/HCMD mix diet is actually since a few days getting very few HCMD, indicating that the remaining HCMD pool work for those on multi-project profile is getting less and less available. The HCMD only clients get priority as is the rule for anyone having chosen a single project.
----------------------------------------With UD client there is no automatic backup kick in so it's recommended to start selecting a second project.... alternately make the switch to BOINC. That agent allows to choose a single project and a 'alternate work' option, should work run low.... i know i will be ticking HCMD only on Phase II for a few clients when time comes for the launch.... it will run on BOINC. Added: Looking at the project stats, it seems HCMD is tailing off... time to choose a second project in the profile! Date Nr. of WU's
