I have a rather splendid problem. Sometimes, not always, after compleetd a work unit and the device is trying to connect to the WCG server it comes a message.
In this message it is written that my device is stopping up every few seconds contacting the server, not doing any useful work. I have installed 5 devices and the message are in all of them. In my account I have points and ranking, but are my agent not doing any useful work and starting from beginninge every time? |

That's what the message usually means. Sorry to break the bad news.
----------------------------------------Anyway, the problem can be caused by quite a few things. To help us narrow it down, can you give us your operating system version, and details of any security software you are running? There are a few known conflicts. Thanks. edit: Looking at your statistics, I think it unlikely that all of your results are failing. If you also give us your Device IDs (on the configuration screen of the agents), then the techs will be able to look into your results in detail. Some releases of Norton are known to cause problems, especially if ALL results are failing to connect properly. It bears investigating. To confirm, download something that works and try it instead, like the free version of AVG.
----------------------------------------http://free.grisoft.com They even supply daily updates to keep the system up-to-date. I have had no problems with it, in either the UD version or BOINC version.

NORMAN :: Antivirus | Firewall | Network security .... made in Norway like Opera. Oh great. Another Norman invasion of England. Where's Sven Forkbeard when we need him? I wondered whether that was a typo -- guess not -- Norton antivirus / Norman antivirus. I am amazed that one hasn't sued the other for similarity objections. It still might be worth downloading the freebie for comparison.

Thomas Aurdal, since we haven't encountered Norman Internet Control before, I think that is the most likely candidate for further investigation. The product you are using includes antivirus software and firewall software, both of which can cause conflicts.
I can think of three things to try. You probably won't want to try all three options - just do what you are comfortable with. 1) Adjust the Norman settings to explicitly allow the WCG software to communicate. There are actually quite a few processes and ports involved. You can find out more about the processes you may need to exclude here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=10301 . Since I'm not familiar with the software, I'm afraid I can't help with this. Also, since UD doesn't give error feedback, it may be hard to tell whether your changes have worked. 2) Try a different AV solution, as retsof suggested. While this is almost certain to fix the problem, it probably represents the most inconvenience to you. Some free alternatives are Avast, AntiVir and AVG. 3) Switch from the WCG UD software to BOINC. This may or may not immediately fix the problem, but it will give us a lot more troubleshooting information if the problem persists. You will be able to check the status of all your work units, and you will get detailed error information. There's a migration guide here: http://www.wcgwiki.org/en/boinc/migration.cfm Finally, I will ask a tech to look up your device ID and see if they can shed any further light on this. |
