confused 100% CPU 24/7....is this a good idea?

I'm not so sure running your CPU at 100% 24/7 is such a good idea. I know running the grid on my dual xeon causes the temp controlled fans to notch up. There is no doubt the CPU is going to run a lot hotter like this - and I suspect it's going to shorten the lifespan of the CPU or cause a marginal CPU to fail. Most CPUs weren't meant to be pegged at 100% 24/7 - that's not a normal load on a workstation.

Thoughts? confused

Re: 100% CPU 24/7....is this a good idea?

Oops - I see there's already a thread about this. But, well, I'm sorry but I'm not risking my machines. No, none of them crashing (7 of them) and they won't - I built them and they have the proper amount of fans and ventalation. This is about the fact that no matter HOW you shake it, CPUs are not made to ran at full throttle 24/7.

The grid is a great idea - but this program sucks. Too much time on the flash and not enough time on the guts (Gee, I got animation but I can't control how much CPU it utilizes)

Looks like it's uninstall time for me as well.

Re: 100% CPU 24/7....is this a good idea?

nhustak

Please reconsider. I've been running the UD agent for over 5 years on a number of PC's for grid.org and wcg and non have been affected by running flat out. Your CPU chip is not like a car engine as it has no moving parts to wear out. It is probably more damaging to have your CPU warm up and cool down on a regular basis as you run your various apps on and off than it is to have your cpu at a permanently high but stable temperature. The rapid warming cooling cycles will put more physical stress on the the chip than the constant temperature experienced while running the World Community Grid agent.

The whole idea of distributed computing projects is to use all of the spare time your cpu would be just twiddling it thumbs.

I hope you stick around and continue to crunch for WCG

Regards

Dave

Re: 100% CPU 24/7....is this a good idea?

another thing to consider is that with the profile options, you can schedule your PC to only crunch for certain hours or on specific days. You don't have to run at 100% 24/7, you can do it 8/5 if you want, even as little as one hour per week.

Also, in the WCG agent, you can edit the preference to increase the snooze timer from the default of 5 minutes up to 120 minutes. Hit the crescent moon button and the agent will snooze (not crunch, not use 100% CPU) for that period. Hit the button again to un-snooze before the timer is up if desired.

Re: 100% CPU 24/7....is this a good idea?

Hi,

This is only an opinion but the true question should be "is it a good idea to run a software which is stressing a lot my CPU ?", playing video games for several hours can damage your CPU, like encoding a video...
In fact it can be dangerous if the cooling system is in bad shape.

I've been running SETI/Folding@home/UD (...) for many years and none of my computers was destroyed. Even the AMD thunderbird or my AMD laptop.

You simply need to check your cooling system.

love struck SAFE AND SECURE!

Welcome to The Forums nhustak

I must say that I have run this "Execelent Program" for years allso!
I have 14 Boxes running 24/7. 8 of them are overclocked w/extrafans.
The ONLY thing I do differenty is clean my Computers 2-3 time a year.
If you run it 24/7 I will just need more cleaning.
Remember MILLIONS of people are doing this type of work all over the
world with no problems. (except those that they imagine;)

We ARE the WORLD! So stick around and...
Keep On Crunch'n
Good Luck
Robert

PS
At present the program only uses 1 of your CPUs.
