I could have sworn that you posted something about Djokovic in the semifinal after my last post, correct
David Nalbandian became the third player since 1994 to defeat the world's top three players in consecutive matches after defeating No. 1 Roger Federer 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win his first ATP Masters Series title in Madrid Sunday. Djokovic defeated the world's top three players (No. 3 Roddick, No. 2 Nadal and No. 1 Federer) in consecutive matches to claim the Montreal Masters title earlier this year. Boris Becker was the only other player to achieve the feat (Stockholm, 1994) in recent times. Nalbandian also joined Djokovic as the only player to beat Nadal and Federer in the same tournament. Nalbandian claimed just his second victory in his past 10 meetings with Federer, who leads their series 8-7 despite losing their first five encounters. http://www.atptennis.com/1/en/2007news/madrid_sunday.asp |

Federer beats Sampras in game two
Roger Federer defeated Pete Sampras for the second time in three days, taking their exhibition match 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) in Kuala Lumpur. Both men held serve to take the first set to a tie-break with world number one Federer inching ahead when Sampras hit a forehand into the net. Sampras, who retired in 2002, brought the tie-break back on serve but Federer clinched it with a backhand volley. The second set also went to a tie-break before Federer sealed victory. The match, the second of three in an exhibition series across Asia, was part of Malaysia's 50th anniversary celebrations of independence from Britain. The pair meet again Macau on Saturday. "I had a taste of what the best is and I think Roger has that extra gear," said Sampras, 36. "He has good volleys and he has this little backhand flick that honestly, I have never seen before... it's something that I didn't have." Federer was equally full of praise for Sampras, saying he had lost little from his trademark serve. "I am really, really impressed by the way he's been playing," said the Swiss. "He's got the most incredible serve you know. I can't read it, he serves it to the line, he serves harder than me." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/7101608.stm ![]() |

Australian Open 2008
The Australian Open is the first of the world's four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, held each January at Melbourne Park. Held in the middle of the Australian summer, the Australian Open is famous for its notoriously hot days. An extreme-heat policy is often put into play when temperatures (and humidity) reach dangerous levels. The tournament was first played in 1905 as The Australasian Championships, became the Australian Championships in 1927 and the Australian Open in 1969. Since 1905, the Championships have been staged in five different cities as follows: Melbourne (50 times), Sydney (17 times), Adelaide (14 times), Brisbane (eight times), Perth (three times), and well as in New Zealand, (twice) in 1906 and 1912. In 1972, it was decided to stage the Tournament in the one city each year, as opposed to visiting various states across the nation, and the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club was selected due to Melbourne attracting the biggest patronage. Melbourne Park (formerly Flinders Park) was constructed in time for the 1988 Open to meet the demands of the evolving tournament that had outgrown Kooyong's capacity. The move to Melbourne Park was an immediate success, with a 90 per cent increase in attendance in 1988 (266,436) on the previous year at Kooyong (140,000). Here the latest Melbourne winners : Year Champion Runner-up Score 1997 Pete Sampras Carlos Moyá 6-2 6-3 6-3 1998 Petr Korda Marcelo Ríos 6-2 6-2 6-2 1999 Yevgeny Kafelnikov Thomas Enqvist 4-6 6-0 6-3 7-6 2000 Andre Agassi Yevgeny Kafelnikov 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 2001 Andre Agassi Arnaud Clement 6-4 6-2 6-2 2002 Thomas Johansson Marat Safin 3-6 6-4 6-4 7-6(4) 2003 Andre Agassi Rainer Schüttler 6-2 6-2 6-1 2004 Roger Federer Marat Safin 7-6(3) 6-4 6-2 2005 Marat Safin Lleyton Hewitt 1-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 2006 Roger Federer Marcos Baghdatis 5-7 7-5 6-0 6-2 2007 Roger Federer Fernando Gonzalez 7-6(2) 6-4 6-4 Scores / Completed Matches Day 4: Thursday, 17 January |
