Are gc and hpf2 for finding new drugs, or more for new 'procedures'?

i'm pretty sure the other 2 projects hcmd and faah are a search for new drugs, which will have to be made, tested and maybe approved a few years from now, yes?

if the gc and hpf2 projects are aimed at new procedures (instead of new drugs), i am wondering if the time needed to test and approve would be shorter than for a new drug.

when i say new procedure, i mean like gene therapy.

does this question make any sense? smile

Hi halfcard,
Both HPF and GC are supporting general biological research in areas that can advance the development of drugs. Cytoscape ( http://www.cytoscape.org/ ) is an example of the sort of program that can use the HPF database as one of its inputs. Fiocruz has some ambitious plans that will use the GC database to support some additional research projects. In both cases these projects are not directly aimed at producing drugs but are intended to support research that may lead to improved understanding that will indirectly advance drug research.

It's a case of making the tools to make the tools that will do the job.

ok thanks. i thought there might be a difference between a 'new drug' and a 'new therapy', i guess they are about the same.

Re: Are gc and hpf2 for finding new drugs, or more for new 'procedures'?

Hi halfcard,
Well, there is a difference between therapies and drugs. Our projects (at least, HPF and GC) are aimed at proteins, which means drugs and diagnostic tests, not directly at therapies. Help Defeat Cancer was aimed at diagnosis, which can affect which therapy is selected. Diagnostic tests can sometimes be used to select drugs and sometimes to select therapies.

Hope i'm not rambling on too confusingly.
