Is it possible to run two different computing engines on the same computer - will they share idle time or will one cancel out the other?
---------------------------------------- Reason I ask is that I'd like to participate in Compute Against Cancer (Parabon Frontier Compute Engine) as well as FightAids@home (Grid Republic Desktop - World Community Grid). Is it possible? Or must I pick one or the other? Thanks in advance for your time, attention and hopefully a knowledgeable answer. Hi FM2,
----------------------------------------We have no knowledge about the CAC, other than it's commercial, and keeps hidden from the volunteer of what's really processed. The last 3-4 posts in this thread https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=13284#99615 explains the difference. This line from CAC closed the door for me "For security reasons, when a task is running, you will not be able to tell whether it is for a paying client or a non-profit researcher or organization." If it works together with Grid Republic (BOINC based), is not known either. On top you would have to play with core affinities so both do not run on the same thread. You'd have to trial and error, BUT, WCG will have soon another Cancer Research project, no secrets and a 3rd Cancer project starting later. Both the results are returned to the public domain. With BOINC (via GR) + dual core machine and choosing FA@H + Help XXXXXXX Cancer (~Project Name not public yet) both can be run as your personal preference. Sekerob

Hello FM2,
Is it possible to run two different computing engines on the same computer I assume you are speaking of a single-core computer, otherwise there would be no question. It depends on the relative priorities. The WCG projects run at the lowest priority. If CAC does as well, then the OS should share time for both processes. Otherwise CAC will hog all the cycles. Be sure to set the WCG project to run at 100% usage. Otherwise it may count the time that CAC runs as usage and only idle when the OS allows it to run. Be sure you have enough memory to runj both programs on the same computer. Otherwise you will spend a lot of time reading and writing Virtual Memory. I have no practical experience with these two programs so you will have to experiment and find out for yourself. Good luck! Lawrence |

Sekerob Thank-you for your reply, Sekerob, and for letting me know about the future cancer projects. I'll check out that thread later, also. I guess I will attempt it and if it doesn't work properly, I'll just uninstall CAC. I'll come back and tell my experience either way. Truly appreciate the reply. ![]() |

Most projects will not coexist, because all are designed to use the remaining computer power. The inefficiencies of trying to run multiple intensive programs can bring them both down or force inefficient run times. Caution is advised for projects that require their own software downloads. Multiple BOINC projects can coexist, and BOINC will swap them in and out to give a predetermined percentage of time to each. I myself am attached to 42 BOINC projects. I have run a few units for each, but most work is contributed to WCG. Only one runs at a time, with the following exception.
----------------------------------------DepSpid (Dependency Spider) is a BOINC project that will coexist and run simultaneously with other BOINC projects to make online inquiries when connected. One non-BOINC project I have found that will co-exist with BOINC is DIMES, another internet inquiry project that has very interesting dynamic graphics of the internet paths found between ISPs all over the world. I have not used BOINC(Grid Republic) because it seems to have a subset of BOINC projects. I have dug out individual BOINC URLs to attach from BOINC statistics forums, etc.
