More "Agent paused" problems...

I'm having some strange "agent paused" errors that I can't figure out. I've read the agent paused page, and searched and read most of the related threads in this forum, and can't find any solutions, or even anyone with a similar situation.

My home network consists of a cable modem, a LinkSys router and hub, and 4 pc's (3 desktops & 1 laptop). All are running Windows 2000, and all are fully patched. None have any anti-virus or firewall software installed, at all. All have functional, unrestricted internet access at all times.

One pc, my "main" pc, can connect fine, and has been running for about 3 days now, completing and returning 5 results without incident.

The other 3 pc's ALL have the "agent paused" problem, none has processed any data because apparently they can't retrieve data from the server to process. Two of the three have fresh, fully patched Win2k installations. The third is a seldom used file and print server, it is fully patched but has little software installed on it.

The one pc that does work fine is the pc I use everyday, has an assortment of software installed including a bunch of dev stuff like Visual Studios, Fireworks, Photoshop, Apache, PHP, MySQL, Perl, Python, NetBeans, Cold Fusion. However, like I said this is the only pc that DOES work with WCG, so this software is likely irrelevant.

This is exactly what happens when I open the WCG window on the other 3 pc's.

1. Popup window: The Grid Agent has encountered a problem while attempting to connect to the Grid Server....
2. Status: receiving 2420 of 2420 bytes from the server... (although sometimes it shows 2414 of 2414)
3. Status: Agent paused, see www.wcgrid.org/cause.html

I'm pretty pc literate and have tried everything I can think of to sort this out, hopefully someone wiser than I can provide some help. The confusing part is the one pc that works, while the other 3 that don't use the same OS on the same network.

Re: More "Agent paused" problems...

i had agent paused, unable to download the first workunit on two PCs. The first was because I had accidentally set my profile to use disk storage of 10 MB, which supposedly is no longer an option, so that shouldn;t be a problem anymore. The other PC did not have enough memory. it was an older machine that I thought I might as well use to crunch for WCG, but it wasn;t worth upgrading thememory just for that so I deinstalled and turned it back off. How much memory is in the three PCs that don't work?

Re: More "Agent paused" problems...

When it only downloads only about 2k of data, I don't see how it could process anything in the first place... perhaps a reinstall of the WCG software is in order (unless it's been attempted), then check to see if it actually processes a little bit... hmmm... maybe your hardware has a kink in it... I don't know... I'm just trying to be productive... lol smile

Re: More "Agent paused" problems...

96MB / 96MB / 64MB

The working PC has 384MB .

I just found the 128MB prerequisite on the System Requirements page. I guess this is the problem. Oh well, they can keep running SETI.

I'll also note for the developers, the "agent paused" error message is VERY misleading, and the explanation indicates it's a connection problem.

Thanks for the help joatmon.

Re: More "Agent paused" problems...

Also to the developers, the program is using less than 6MB of RAM on this pc, I don't see why it can't run with 96MB or even 64MB. There may be a reason for the 128MB minimum that I'm not seeing, but if it's just some arbitrary minum there are surely millions of PC's sitting idle out there which are a few years old.

Re: More "Agent paused" problems...

It would help if the agent could give better error messages, such as "Agent paused because this system has inadequate memory" or better yet, make checking for the required amount of memory part of the installation process, or best, as you suggested, make the agent run on systems with 64 MB RAM.
