How can one setup UD.exe without having to enter the Administrator's password every time a reboot is required?
We have tried: 1) A shortcut to UD.exe must be placed in Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. 2) C:Program Files\WorldCommunityGrid\UD.exe has to be set up with the "advanced" property "Run with different credentials" which then requires the Administrator password. but whenever a computer is rebooted, the Administrator's password is requested. If the password is not entered at that time, WCG doesn't run and our participation deteriorates over time unless someone regularly checks to see if all the systems are reporting results. Our goal is to produce an "All Users/Startup" entry that will give the "Grid" the Admin Privileges required, which are not available to the sixteen lab systems when they are booted up and signed on! If the "Student User" shuts down the system, and/or performs a "Restart", the Grid will need "Admin Priv" in order to execute! These are alterations required by (1) our classroom setting where the typical user -- a student -- has limited privileges that rule out receiving executable material from the Internet and (2) where an additional firewall, beyond our authority, lies between our systems and the Internet. Thanks! |

Hello twwcg,
I am going to assume that you are running on Vista. Vista uses special security rules for anything installed in Program Files so people are installing legacy programs in their own directory, such as C:\WCG: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=12856 You might want to consider installing BOINC as a service. There are many different university research projects available on BOINC besides those administered by WCG. See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php or the BOINC home page at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ Lawrence |

I don't know if you need the security of requiring a logon during reboot. If not, you can bypass entering a password by doing the following.
----------------------------------------1. click start 2. click run 3. enter control userpasswords2 4. uncheck box for require password for logon 5. enter admin password and click ok you can get more detailed instructions at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/tips/advanced/autologon.mspx This will only work for XP pro and corporate - not XP home edition. |

twilyth, that advise will definitely NOT make it to the FAQ table or the Start Here forum! Sekerob Sorry Sek - don't understand. This is a well-known work around for auto logon - I use it on all my machines. I'm not recommending it to defeat security on commercially used computers. I would never suggest someone attempt to bypass security protocols put in place by the machine's owner. Can you advise the poster on setting up boinc as a process to allow running of boinc WITHOUT logging on. I think that is what they are really interested in. twilyth,
----------------------------------------Though certain info is available, it's not like we want to promote it. Have a machine that at all times auto-logs in and does a Windows key-L to log out immediately to get the UD agent going on a pure cruncher. Perceive that to be sa %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation The service installation is discussed in Lawrence's post above and is presently only available in the distribution from the official BOINC / Berkeley download site (without WCG skin). Downside is (if one thinks it is one), that graphics wont work out of the box on a service install. There are a few steps to get it anyhow for those intend on it. Sekerob Edit: corrected saver to read safer.

twilyth, Though certain info is available, it's not like we want to promote it. Have a machine that at all times auto-logs in and does a Windows key-L to log out immediately to get the UD agent going on a pure cruncher. Perceive that to be saver. The auto-logout line to put in a short-cut is: %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation Ok, I guess LH already address issue - apologies. Don't understand quote above. How does automatically (via shortcut) logging out help with running UD agent? What does key-L mean? By "saver" do you mean screen saver? I think the problem people have is that if a machine crashes or reboots due to critical update, UD agent will not start running until you log in. Also, there are problems with BOINC on older machines. I've had that problem with old machines using ATI graphics and running BOINC screen saver so I had to use UD agent instead and that will not start up until you log in - automatically or otherwise. I think I get your meaning, but if you could clarify, that would be appreciated. [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at May 23, 2007 12:55:51 PM] |

Sysinternals (now part of MS) has an Auto-login utility that encrypts the password. Windows Key - L brings up the sign-on screen. By doing this, all programs in the autostart folder will execute without someone being able to tamper with the machine if unattended.
----------------------------------------If a screensaver is configured it would run after the usual idle time. Safer with an F if you like Homophonics are real fun in English
