My favorite internet radio station 'Pandora' started blocking foreign listeners on demand of US legislative. Now the US itself is loosing a great music advertising resource:
----------------------------------------"Thousands of U.S. webcasters plan to turn off the music and go silent this Tuesday, June 26th, to draw attention to an impending royalty rate increase that, if implemented, would lead to the virtual shutdown of this country's Internet radio industry. In March, the Copyright Royalty Board announced that it would raise royalties for Internet broadcasters, moving them from a per-song rate to a per-listener rate. The increase would be made retroactive to the beginning of 2006 and would double over the next five years. Internet radio sites would be charged per performance of a song. A "performance" is defined as the streaming of one song to one listener; thus a station that has an average audience of 500 listeners racks up 500 "performances" for each song it plays." George, time to go with the underground alternative. And now it's time for some howling music: listening to: Southern Man, Neil Young (& and the crazy horse):

Yeah I really hope that bill doesn't pass. My favorite radio station, di.fm, would probably have to close if it passes. It would be very sad if most of these internet radio stations were closed or bought up, further increasing the market share of the top 5 or so media companies - ClearChannel, et al... |

Clear Channel, et al, would very much like to see internet radio shut down to eliminate the competition. The RIAA knows full well that these small operations can't possibly afford the proposed royaty rates and are probably acting on behalf of the big commercial networks further eroding choice in the US.
Commercial radio stinks and I refuse to pay for satellite radio. They've already started injecting advertising into some of their content and you can be sure it will soon be in all of it. After all, we're dumb enough to pay to watch commercials on cable TV so why not on pay radio too. To get back on topic, I'm digitizing all of my LP's and cassettes and right now am listening to Wes Montgomery's Road Song album as I type. ![]() |
