Hi,
In the last couple of days I get a message to the effect that work is not available because of a deprecated application. I am running Boinc client 5.4.11_i686 for Linux. Would someone please explain what the problem may be. Thank you. Cheers, -39er |

Why would you check HERE first and not THERE? Deprecated means "not current" but also means "finished" for this context. (2) Check the read-only areas at the top of the forum for current concerns. (3) Check/tick the Box in the BOINC project choice to indicate that you will take other work if your primary work runs out. Even current projects like genome comparison ran out of workunits this morning and sent a few HPF workunits until the genome comparison workunits were refreshed. Different workunits being downloaded are usually a clue that something is happening, but at least you can crunch something while you are checking. A computer doing nothing is why everyone is here in the first place. (4) Yes, checking the current BOINC release list is also useful. Bugs are fixed and new features are added. Stay away from the alpha or beta releases for general consumption. It's time for an upgrade.

Cheers, -39er Hi 39er, Whoever decided on such an archaic word that non-native english speaker will have a hard time understanding, not going to speculate on. knreed gives an explanation here: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=13077#96551 Deselecting HDC won't be possible if that were the cause as the project no longer shows in the My Projects and Device Profile choices. If you though had a preferred project, it could have happened in the last week due work haven been taken off line or temporarily not available. A. Can you post copy past the message plus 5 before and 5 after. The time stamps help to correllate to server side events. B. Is that the only active device as your statistics show continuous output until the last statistics update? cheers

Thank you all who replied. It appears that I had this problem before and in the last day and a half things are chugging along fine.
As I mentioned, I am running client version 5.4.11_i686 and I wonder why I have to update to a new version. From experience with IT I have learned this: Don't fix it if it ai'nt broke. Accordingly, I would hesitate to update if it is not absolutely necessary for the proper processing of the assigned work units. I am not really interested in all the new gadgets added to the new version nor do I watch the graphics. My machine runs with the monitor off if I am not in front of it. So, do I have to update? I hope not as it is only more work for me. It is finally summer and I have to do gardening. cheers, -39er |

You most likely got that message when we temporarily suspend sending out work for FightAIDS@Home. We suspend the project by marking it 'deprecated'.
If you had your preference to only receive some of our projects then you could have received this message. I will have to dig into the code and find where that message is generated and send a more useful message such as "Work is not being sent for FightAIDS@Home" Feel free to stay at 5.4. However, there are some nice feature in 5.8 - one of them is that it uses compression when you return results to the server. |

Whoever decided on such an archaic word that non-native english speaker will have a hard time understanding Yes, it is archaic, but the W3C web standards uses it all of the time for things that are not current. Here they distinguish between "deprecated" and "obsolete". http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/conform.html#deprecated I will have to dig into the code and find where that message is generated and send a more useful message such as "Work is not being sent for FightAIDS@Home" A project specific item should help.Feel free to stay at 5.4. However, there are some nice feature in 5.8 - one of them is that it uses compression when you return results to the server. It saves me enough on space and time to be noticed, at least 20%.

The infamous credit problem has received attention, and now WU's crunched under GNU/Linux receive a much more reasonable amount of credit. |
