Steady on, please - both of you.
Questioning authority is good, although I do like to think things run a lot better here than at grid.org. However, the most rabid cynics are the Community Advisors. We cheerfully point out the flaws in the system, and constantly nag the staff about all sorts of things. Amazing they put up with us, really. WCG keep their promises, but boy - the mills of IBM grind exceeeedingly slowly. And just to straighten out what Lawrence said earlier: WCG will be reexamining the forum issue later this year. If things go well, it is possible that a forum upgrade will be scheduled for this year - but my money's on next year. Oh - and thanks for the compliments. We appreciate it. :-D |

Hi all,
----------------------------------------Glad to see a hot, sweaty discussion on the subject. Well, the problem as always boils down to how much functionality, looks et al. The team I represent is team Techenclave. To put it simply, most of us are technology geeks & I have seen the forum being upgraded atleast 3-4 times within the period. Each time it was either a skin change (as an option) or some more functionality added to the forum without sacrificing the time needed to browse. Now lemme give a concrete example as to why I think the forums need upgrading. Sekerob gave pretty good stats in the 12th post (believe me, I had to count there is no self-counting feature, neither does it have a self-linking hyperlink) Now I am having an issue with checkpointing in Boinc Agent & hence gave this search :- https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/...&forum=83&rows=20 Now while I was able to roundabout that there are 111 posts. Do you think I or any user would have the patience or the time to go through all of them or learn some kind of regex so I can fine-tune what I want. What would have been a much better solution would have been to be able to say look for 'checkpoint' in the titles only & not everywhere else which would have given lets say 15-20 posts which are more easy to look through. Time saved for both the user as well as the volunteer. Another point what is the deal with having a watch page as well as favorite page. What is additional there in the favorite which is not there in the watch option. Even the documentation provided by mvnforum https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/....html#user_watches_change is silent about it. While it gives info. about the watch page as such it doesn't mention at all about the favorite page. And you can see where am I going. Instead of the forum being an enabler & being easy in the sense, it's transparent & I just need to worry about the issue I am having I get distressed about how things work. Of course each forum software would have some innovation or some different way of doing things but usability is a big thing nowadays with each forum software. I could cite a dozen references of different forum softwares both in the free software world, as well as non-free as it makes it competitve. So what happens in the end is I basically have to start to make a new post even though there might be a post which addresses my concern fully and would be doing that right after posting this long one. Thank you for your patience in reading so far. Feel free to attack, comment, make suggestions as that is what its all for :) Another point, the more later one delays the more difficult it becomes to do the overhauling as things have changed so much (either skins, format or structure in the way data is kept) and things like that which makes the whole thing stagnant. I'm not being pessimist but have seen boards, communities shifting loyalties for things like this too. Just as an use-case scenario if big bro. Google decides tomorrow to give a better interface for grid computing experience using phpbb or some other free/open source implementation, have an informal IRC channel. and have wikiwiki or some other wiki software I'm sure a bunch of people would just move to that. It's the reason why the forum softwares are constantly tweaking, updating, upgrading the softwares in the first place. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 15, 2007 8:29:29 PM] |

I was thinking somebody would respond to my post above but apparently people have decided to give that one a miss :(
Anyway I'm still hopeful that things do turn out better. Just so that people also know mvnforum is also hosted at sourceforge. http://sourceforge.net/projects/mvnforum/ The last update on the CVS occurring about a month back so things are active there. Hopefully we see some action on this part & can make some kind of disintegration or loose integration so in the future we can upgrade the forum software more flexibly :) Hope some people do respond to this one atleast :) Happy Crunching ! |

shirish,
----------------------------------------What you say on the current implementation of mvnForum is true and probably every forum user agrees. This subject has been beaten to death. The WCG support team has explained many times that the current implementation has been customized to a point that makes mere upgrades inappropriate. Since this is usually the case with too much customization I have no reason to not believe them. Therefore the upgrading/replacement of this software has become such a task that it cannot be handled "on the fly" and it becomes a project in itself, competing with all others in the priority list. Since there are more important projects in the list (i.e. closer to the core of the grid's purpose) and the forum is still able to achieve its basic communication purpose this project is rather low in the list Too bad but, personally, I think that we can live with that and trust the WCG staff when they say that they want to do it and that they will do it. After all they are the primary users of this software and suffer from it too, no? I do not see much more to say that would add anything useful to that subject except that I am not much convinced by your scenario of crowds fleeing to another grid just because it would have a better forum software and nicer other communication features: something you underestimate by far (also because the current forum software does not make it easy to evaluate) is the number of people who simply crunch, do not use the forum, do not even read it, and even much more, are not even registered to it! I hope you feel less abandoned now. Jean. ![]() |

Checked for you guys and the 2007 planner update after Didactylos' response includes a forum upgrade.... in the same period when a phase ii project launch is scheduled. Which of the 2 will cause most fever to get it out?

Which of the 2 will cause most fever to get it out? OK, the project should win - obviously. But are you giving us real hope for a 2007 upgrade? Just want to make sure I'm not reading anything into your post. Should I go out now and get a bottle of Veuve Clicquot? ![]() ![]() |

It's tentative, but that's the plan.
Expect it late 2007. There are a few things scheduled before it. |
