Connection problems with BOINC

I'm trying to set up the BOINC client on my notebook at work, but I'm having some problems. When the client first opens, it tries to connect to the project, but fails and lists this in my messages screen...
"World Community Grid couldn't do Internet communication, and no default connection is selected. Please connect to the Internet, or select a default connection using Advanced/Options/Connections"

I've tried adding in some proxy information, which I'm pretty sure is correct, but then when I start the BOINC client, it fails to connect, stating that the URL (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/) doesn't contain BOINC information.

For kicks, I tried installing the plain-jane UD agent, which connects just fine. Do these two clients connect to different servers? It's possible that the communication is getting shut out by my corporate network, but if the UD agent connects, it seems as though the BOINC client should connect as well.

Re: Connection problems with BOINC

BOINC does tend to have difficulty with proxies. Sometimes proxies strip out information that BOINC requires.

What version of BOINC are you using? Do you know what proxy software is being used? Does the proxy require authorisation?

Re: Connection problems with BOINC

Wow, talk about a fast response!

BOINC is at v5.8.15, downloaded from the WCG site. I don't know what sorts of things are going on behind the scense around here, although I'm fairly certain that the proxy isn't even required. I've had the proxy settings for my LAN connection set to "automatically detect" for as long as I've had this PC, and it has never presented a problem with internet browsing. As far as authentication, I very much doubt it requires that, as anyone can plug in a PC to out network and get internet access.

Re: Connection problems with BOINC

Okay. The current release is 5.8.16 for Windows, so you may want to get that version: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

BOINC saves the information it gets when looking up the attach URL in the file master_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml - be warned, it's not actually an XML file. Check that it contains the line <scheduler>https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/boinc/wcg_cgi/fcgi</scheduler> somewhere near the top. If it doesn't, please paste the first couple of dozen lines here for us to check.

Re: Connection problems with BOINC

Yes, it's a proxy error. Rename the file to .html and open it, then contact tgn-security@trw.com as it advises.

Re: Connection problems with BOINC

Will do! Is there a way to configure BOINC to utilize internet traffic like the UD agent?

Re: Connection problems with BOINC

It does use perfectly normal internet traffic - more normal than UD, even; UD uses a proprietary encryption scheme.

I think you simply set up the manual proxy information incorrectly. Sorry, I don't know why it failed with the automatic configuration.

Re: Connection problems with BOINC

You hit the nail on the head, Didactylos! After a few minutes with one of the guys down in the server room, he showed me where to find the right proxy. Thanks!!

Re: Connection problems with BOINC

Excellent!

And this is why we like BOINC: it's fully transparent, and I can always fire up the debugger when I need to.
