Didactylos & others,
Unfortunately, WCG's focus is on running the grid. They lack the resources for a comprehensive website redesign. They will get it done eventually, but it isn't a high priority. The Debian lists work well; http://lists.debian.org/ . WCG might simply install the software. Changes to Web pages would be minimal. Best Regards, ... Peter E. |

I will be frank.
That's mailing list software, and isn't even slightly relevant to our needs here. Secondly, the pages are tag soup of the worst kind. Are you seriously holding that up as a good example? |

I will be frank. That was a very looooong page, and I didn't even let it finish loading. That's mailing list software, and isn't even slightly relevant to our needs here. Secondly, the pages are tag soup of the worst kind. Are you seriously holding that up as a good example?

Didactylos and others,
That's mailing list software, and isn't even slightly relevant to our needs here. The list archives are easily searched and browsed. Such a mailing list can support a forum. Secondly, the pages are tag soup of the worst kind. Are you seriously holding that up as a good example? Not a good example but feasible; quite efficient really. If an archived mailing list can work, why use a Web based forum? I suppose we've come down to arguing over taste. We are unlikely to settle this ever. Best Regards, ... Peter E. |

You and I might be quite comfortable with mailing lists, but WCG is for everyone - including people who (bless their cotton socks) can barely turn a computer on. So, we have a nice user friendly forum. Not as user friendly as a UserFriendly forum, perhaps - but simple enough.
You say a mailing list can support a forum - but who writes the interface software? And you still actually need a forum. You see my point - it's a fair amount of work. So, in a few months time, the WCG techs will take an off the shelf forum and integrate it again with the rest of the WCG backend. At the same time they will address the forum wishlist, and make sure that as much as possible is fixed. And that's the best they can do. |
