If I click on "Modify Device Profile" or "Visit World Community Grid Forum" in WCGrid_Rosetta.exe, it will open the links in IE. I don't ever want IE used on my machine and I don't allow it to connect to the internet. How can I get them to open up in Firefox instead?
I assume I need to change an extension association somewhere in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, but I can't figure out which because there are too many keys there. (I am using WinXP SP1) |

(I am using WinXP SP1) Well, I agree with you re IE, but let's be honest for a moment... opening this page in IE will not cause any harm. There are no ads or malware present. That out of the way, yes, clearly something is wonky with your system because it doesn't work that way on any of the systems that I use (all use Firefox). Perhaps try setting IE as the default browser, then reinstalling Firefox and setting it to default again? Something may have glitched last time, or since your initial FF install, resulting in some control reverting to IE. Worth a shot... shouldn't take more than a couple minutes to try and it won't mess up any of your settings. |

I believe 4 things could have happened, Firefox is not default, you don't have the latest version (1.0), some files may be corrupt, or the install file is corrupt... however it is, just take the necessary action to fix the problem.

I appreciate the quick posts, guys.
Perhaps try setting IE as the default browser, then reinstalling Firefox and setting it to default again? That got it, thanks . You were right, something must have been glitched on my system. Firefox seemed to be used as the default for some programs and extensions, but not for others. Actually, I didn't even have to reinstall Firefox. First setting IE as default, then Firefox as default was enough. The key was setting IE first. No idea why, but just setting Firefox as default wasn't enough to fix it. I must have tried doing that 20 times before posting here. opening this page in IE will not cause any harm. There are no ads or malware present. Agreed. I guess I am in crusade mode against IE. The users of the computers I (semi) admin haven't listened to me in the past about not surfing with IE and I have ended up spending hours uninfecting them. To make things easier, I recently started blocking IE from connecting to the internet with the firewall. So if a program tries to open IE, a user has to cut and paste the link from IE into Firefox. No big deal, just an annoyance. |

I hear you. I found that the only way to stop our users from launching IE was to delete the program icon from both their desktop, quicklaunches, and the start menu, and tell them it was no longer an option.
I didn't delete the program itself, of course, so the truly brave that went spelunking of course found it in program files, but at that point I had an "A-Hah!" evidence I could ream them with and figure out the worst offenders. Most users were content using Firefox, however, once I removed the big blue "e" so their ingrained reflexes were thwarted. I rewarded advanced users who listened to me, and users with special access needs with the "IE View" plugin. (Required by some sites they legitmately needed to reach, sadly.) Works a treat, as they say across the pond. |

if you go intot he 'set program access...' utility, and remove IE as a component of windows, it removes all shortcuts to it, but does not remove the program, so using iexplore in the run command still brings it up. it's a quick way to do your dirty work of removing shortcuts.

Hmm... I for one am a Firefox user, because IE has so many holes in it. I just got tired of it. Of course, I just moved for a change, cuz I was tired of the same old IE...

Hello CompuDude Im ignorant why dont you like IE I havent had any problems Im running Norton Internet Security @ Spysweeper IE has more security holes than a safe made of swiss cheese. Viruses, spyware, and general crap accumulate at a frightening pace simply by visiting the wrong website (accidentally or on purpose). Firefox is free, faster than IE, and considerably more resistant to spyware. Tons of info on the internet about how superior Firefox is. Go to http://www.getfirefox.com for more info and a free download. |

If you also don't want your current browser window to be replaced by the WCG page when you click on the links in the Agent, you can configure your browser to open a new tab/window using the following instructions:
----------------------------------------Mozilla: * should already do this. Firefox: 1. Tools->Options... 2. Select 'Advanced' in the left bar 3. Expand the 'Tabbed Browsing' section if not already expanded. 4. In the 'Open links from other applications in' section, select 'a new window' (or 'a new tab in the most recent window' if you want a new tab instead of a window). 5. Click OK Internet Explorer: 1. Tools->Internet Options... 2. Select the Advanced Tab 3. Under 'Browsing', uncheck the 'Reuse windows for launching shortcuts' checkbox. 4. Click OK or Apply. Opera 1. Tools->Preferences... 2. Select 'Windows' in the left bar 3. Select 'Prefer separate windows' from the Window handling list. 4. OK or Apply. As long as we're here, my personal browser is: Mozilla. Firefox just has too many bugs compared to Mozilla. It's also either lacking or made unusable a lot of the features that are easily accessible in Mozilla (bookmark & load a group of tabs anyone?) Not to start a war or anything. Just my opinion.
