Unable to Connect to Core Client

Ok, I was running BOINC fine for a full day or so, then this morning I wanted to run 3DMark06 so I exited out of BOINC and all my other extra programs in the bottom right corner. After I got done running 3DMark06 I rebooted to restart everything. Since then I have been getting the Unable to Connect to Core Client error. I also looked around and couldn't find anything about this.

If I try to click on Add Projects it comes up with this error Boinc client is not connected to World Community Grid Client. Please use Advanced/Select Computer... to connect up to a World Community Grid Client.

To connect up to your local computer use Localhost.

So I tried that, and Localhost doesn't work.

Running Vista Business 32bit.

Re: Unable to Connect to Core Client

Normally, when you start BOINC Manager, it starts the core client automatically.

First thing to do, then, is see if the core client is running. Open task manager, and you will see boincmgr.exe (BOINC Manager). Now look for boinc.exe (the core client).

If the core client is running:
You need to connect to it. Your firewall may be blocking communications. The client uses RPC on port 31416. Connect to localhost, and if the password field is blank, you will find it in gui_rpc_auth.cfg.

If the core client isn't running:
Vista prevented the core client from starting. The easest workaround is to reinstall BOINC outside the Program Files folder. We recommend C:\BOINC\

Re: Unable to Connect to Core Client

Ok, That must be it because I saw that Boinc.exe was not running. I checked my startup and it is set to run boinc.exe /s but nothing happens. When I go and manually launch it boinc.exe /s opens it briefly then it disappears almost instantly so I have no idea if it is erroring out or what. But if I just run boinc.exe then it runs in a dos box which I can't get rid of or it will close the program.

I also set boinc.exe to run as administrator so not sure... Guess I will have to do the uninstall/reinstall thing you suggested.

Re: Unable to Connect to Core Client

[Edit delete.] Go to Start | All Programs | Windows Defender. Next go to Tools | Software Explorer to see if BOINC Core Client is listed in Software Explorer. If not permitted, highlight BOINC Core Client and click on the Enable pushbutton on the lower right. You can also look in the Notification Area (right side of the Task Bar) to see if there is an icon showing startup programs which were not permitted. Also look in Windows Defender | History to see the list of permitted items. It should be listed as shown here.

My Startup | BOINC Manager shortcut properties are C:\Users\Vester\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.

I don't run as a service, but. for me, a reinstallation will fix all of the shortcuts and file associations. Remove in Programs and Features first, but leave the BOINC folder in Program Files.

Re: Unable to Connect to Core Client

It says "core client", but that is actually BOINC Manager.

The Enable button is greyed out for ALL my programs listed in Windows Defender.

I uninstalled and reinstalled to c:\BOINC and that seems to have fixed it but I would rather keep it in Program Files.

Re: Unable to Connect to Core Client

Well, if you can put up with it for a few months, the next release will be fully Vista ready.

Re: Unable to Connect to Core Client

right i had this same problem....i worked it out!!!

boinc.exe /s is an invalid switch...run it from a cmd prompt and you find out that.

so run just boinc.exe and it sits there for a bit then comes up with

2007-08-13 19:03:34 [---] Make sure directory permissions are set correctly
gstate.init() failed: -109

so, on the c:\program files\boinc folder change the permissions to "Everyone" to do full access.

all working!
