WDC is based on the UD grids: but why even create a seperate grid when you have a larger and more developed grid in the normal UD grid (http://www.ud.com)?

It would appear that IBM had specific objectives when they set up the World Community Grid. On the "About Us" page (linked above), they say: "World Community Grid's mission is to create the world's largest public computing grid to tackle projects that benefit humanity." They go on further in describing the types of projects they seek to support and the desire that the results be in the public domain. From this it can be deduced that they did not feel that these requirements were met by others so they stepped in to do so.

Egotistically quoting myself:
----------------------------------------If you use Google, you will see that most grid projects for the next few years are research projects designing grids. Before always-on broadband connections / multi-GB hard drives / fractional GB RAM this was a very limited field. The next generation of school children will grow up believing in donating computer time the way the current one believes in benefit sales for school projects. This is going to grow! There are going to be a number of grids. Contrary to what some people say, I hold the opinion that there are many people who will contribute computer time as publicity reaches critical mass. So there is reason to develop a number of Advisory Boards (using WCG terminology) to bring different strengths to bear on reviewing project proposals. "One Big Grid" would be very impressive, but probably not optimal. It is possible for multiple grids to cooperate on really big projects. In fact, this is happening right now as both http://www.grid.org and http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org run the Human Proteome Folding Project for the Institute for Systems Biology. I think that the phrase "a rising tide raises all boats" applies here. Added: Hi, Dave. I did not know you were up when I started answering this post. So could it be possible that school systems (whcih largely run without doing anything... or just having a student type up a document) will become grids? Because there is a lot of computers per school, and a lot of schools in the world....

Because there is a lot of computers per school, and a lot of schools in the world.... The problem with this is getting the authority to run a third party program on a PC which you do not own. Always get agreement to install any program on a PC that you do not own otherwise you could get into trouble due to Acceptable User Policies. |

No I wasn't suggesting that I'd actually install WCG on to a computer that I don't own.... but then all I am trying to do is help the world....

If this grid is for humanitarian efforts only what does UD do?
and if i wanted to do something that UD was doing would i have to install thier program. If they both run using the same software could i switch between the two when i want to? |

Currently, http://www.grid.org is running 2 projects. One is a Ligand project for Cancer research sponsored by Oxford University; the other is the same Human Proteome Folding Project for the Institute for System Biology that WCG is running. Because the Agents used are so similar, it is not possible to have both on the same computer. You must uninstall one and install the other to switch between the grids. But that is quickly done and the two web sites are very similar, so if you know how to use one agent, the other is easily picked up.

Yippy-Do our thoughts are with ALL in this wonderfull 21st CENTURY ps: we never did SETI@Home but GooGle labs F@H and http-Folding.Stanford.EDU ,,, we're trying...
