Re: 3rd party monitor help

Good luck! We're here to help if you need it. Start by setting up BOINCview to monitor the machine it's installed on. Once that's working and you have a feel for the process adding in the remote machines should be easy.

The link Sekerob posted is very good, lots of details and potential pitfalls are explained.

Re: 3rd party monitor help

The most noticeable problem with BOINC 5.8 is that it takes FOREVER to shut down. This is a new problem, this recent version only, and will probably disappear soon.

Lawrence

Lawrence, can you point me to prior reports on this FOREVER thing. It's the first time i read about an issue like that. What kind of PC/OS?

thx

Re: 3rd party monitor help

My computer - Windows XP with a AMD Sempron 3100+ cpu. BOINC used to exit in about 15 seconds. But now it seems to take at least a minute. I have not measured with a watch. Just did - 5 minutes and 43 seconds till the BOINC icon vanished from my Systray after I hit Exit. It is really irritating. With luck everything important shuts down much faster - - but I do not believe in Lady Luck.

Re: 3rd party monitor help

Think you may want to check up on your AV/Firewall. If there is intermittent comms from the BOINCmgr to the BOINC daemon you could get this. In prior versions even had it that BOINCmgr would close and leaving the daemon running as were it running as a service. From 5.8.16 it always closes proper in 10/15 seconds... Intel inside on all :O

Other thought is a HD issue, writing away the files to save. If poorly or full or massive fragmentation, it can take longer or very long for it to be able to do the writes and verify. It would though manifest as HD trashing.

cheers.

I noticed this too when I was trying to install BOINC & BOINCview. It "appears" that the programs do not shut off right away, and the task bar icons remain for a long time. I found that simply waving my cursor over the icons makes them disappear ...possibly refreshing the task bar display?

Re: 3rd party monitor help

I've seen programs do that. I suspect that BOINC is failing to remove the icon properly. Or maybe it's a Windows bug. It's too long since I worked with Notify Icons for me to be sure.
