Re: 3rd party monitor help

It is kind of an advanced feature. Sorry....

But it is also secure. That's important, too.

Details are here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/RpcAuth

Please ask if it doesn't seem to work as planned. It is complicated.

But once it's set up, it's easy to use, and secure. Who could ask for more?

Re: 3rd party monitor help

@ Olympic, can you please shrink your screen shots to the appropriate forum size.... if you save them in 640x480 in PNG, zooming as needed will maintain fairly good fidelity.

thanks.

Re: 3rd party monitor help

Personally I don't understand why anyone would use the UD.exe client. confused

Boinc is by far the superior of the two applications.

Re: 3rd party monitor help

Having just moved over here following the departure of UD from the scene
I listened to advice from several existing WCG "old timers"
Sorry Scribe , senior members
and was told boinc was the way to go.thought I would try it and if it didnt work for me would go back to the old cobwebby UD system.
The Instalation was straight forward for the first Machine the three other older slower machines just required the application down load.
I can now see them all working as the screen shots above show.
I am really impressed so for me there is no question as to which to use.

Re: 3rd party monitor help

Setting up BOINCview is fairly simple, I'll do my best to describe the process in laymens terms.

First of all, all computers must be on the same network, the default windows network is "workgroup" as seen in start>>control panel>>system>>computer name.

Also, it is best if you set each computers IP address manually so that they don't change and render BOINCview inoperative. Go to start>>all programs>>accessories>>command prompt and type in "ipconfig" to see this information. Then go to start>>control panel>>network connections, right-click on your internet connection and select "properties". In the scroll window select "Internet protocol(TC/IP)" and click "properties". Select the button next to "use the following IP address" and enter the inforrmation obtained from the command prompt. Then select the button for "use the following DNS server address" and enter your default gateway address in the first line. The second line can be left blank.

Repeat this process on all machines.

Now open a text editor such as notepad and type in the IP address of the
machine which will run BOINCview. Save this file as "remote_hosts.cfg" to your BOINC directory usually found in C:\program files\BOINC. Now open notepad again and type in the password you'd like to use. Save this file to your BOINC directory as "gui_rpc_auth.cfg". If the files already exist, overwrite them. Then restart BOINC and check the messages tab to see if "remote control allowed" appears. Repeat this process on all machines. Saving the .cfg files to a flash drive or floppy to transfer to other machines can save a few steps if you prefer.

Now it's time to setup BOINCview. Go to options>>locations and click "add location". Type in a name for a remote machine (can be any name you choose, not just the computer name, and select "get data via network access". Enter the IP address of the remote machine and the password you saved in the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file and click apply. Repeat these steps for all locations you'd like to monitor including the machine BOINCview is installed on.

And that's all there is too it. Sounds complicated but follow the steps carefully and you'll get it done. There are many settings and tweaks in BOINCview to play around with but I won't get into those here. You can explore those at your leisure as most are straight forward. Good luck and happy BOINCing! wink

Re: 3rd party monitor help

Thanks for the information olympic (I copied to a Word Doc). I'll try to get BOINC going this next week and tell everyone what happens. I know I'm not a computer wiz, but I've conquered such things before.

Still, I wonder if it really matters if I use UD.exe. I know BOINC can download ahead of time, but I don't see my comps starting a new WU more than a few seconds after finishing the previous WU. I might just be losing 15sec or so per WU, but maybe it's worth it for staying simple.

Re: 3rd party monitor help

Hello twowild4,
I like simple too. The basic UD client suits me fine. However, using BOINC gives you a My Grid - Results Status page that gives you feedback about any errors or other problems with your results. This does not matter for most users - things simply work whether you use the BOINC or UD client. But for people with problems, the BOINC Results Status page is very handy. The most noticeable problem with BOINC 5.8 is that it takes FOREVER to shut down. This is a new problem, this recent version only, and will probably disappear soon.
