The possible boinc profile names, "work", "home" and "school" are woefully inadequate and unlikely to be useful at all to most people. (If you really want to hard-code profile names, things like "server", "laptop" and "desktop" would be more sensible.)
The really annoying thing is that it is possible to create profiles with any name you like, just by using the obvious URL. The Device Profiles page finds and lists any profiles that you create, no matter what you named them. However, the Device Configuration page doesn't bother to put any profile names into its "Current Assigned Device Profile?" drop-down list except those called work, home or school. Please make the Device Configuration page list all profiles in its drop-down. |

For the WCG agent, you can create as many profiles as you like, since the are WCG restricted. For BOINC, the 4 are X-Project standards i.e. does not matter which project you open up, e.g. 'work' profile, it's everywhere the same, meaning you only need to change it at 1 project and it applies to all devices hooked to the 'work' definition. WCG can pass your and others request to BOINC developers, but if they are willing to expand is a different question.
----------------------------------------I think the device configuration page only lists those active over the last 7/14 days. That's perfectly fine for most and me. Not interested to see what has not been producing work for a long time. Once the device 'merge' becomes an option (no prediction when), many that want can get rid of any duplicate device registrations.

I strongly doubt whether the BOINC agent will take any notice of arbitrary profiles, even if WCG were to create them.
If you want to improve this - BOINC is open source. You know what to do. |

Thanks for that. I hadn't guessed it was a boinc restriction.
