Spammers...

I notice that we had a spammer advertising his wares in our PCReview Crew team thread the other day (SEOfan - Post on: Apr 2, 2007 10:31:24 AM) - it has been deleted and cannot be seen when viewing the thread normally, but I notice that if you go to reply to a post, it is then visable in the list of previous messages showing below.

Was just wondering why that is, does it mean that it has only been 'hidden from view' rather than physically deleted?

Re: Spammers...

We do not seem to have a huge problem with spammers/advertisers - yet! There is already the deterant of the necessity for a would be spammer to do a little work first - joining/creating a profile etc.

If it gets any more common then maybe it would be a good idea to make some sort of minimum crunching achievement (even VERY small) a condition of being able to post to PUBLIC forum areas (newbies with tech dificulties could post to a non public help forum, and interesting, relevant questions could be made public afterwards).

This would eliminate those who want publicity without giving something in return. Companies who contribute to WCG are welcome to, and deserve, as much publicity as they can get from being here.

By our Forum replies, we should encourage those who do it the right way, and discourage those who do it the wrong way. I think there are examples of this in the forums right now biggrin

Re: Spammers...

I would revise what I said above, because it seems that there ARE some who are willing to go through the work of joining and a little crunching in order to get spam advertising through. We have just seen such a post in in the "Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy" forum. I post here in order to minimise giving it the oxygen of further attention (before it is deleted).

There are many companies who crunch for us here. They do this primarily because they believe in the value of this mode of research. In addition, their company name is publicised and is associated with a good cause. WCG has rules to cover the participation of companies and the publicity they get. Most companies are happy to abide by these rules - to have their name seen and to have a web link on their team page. Most would not dream of posting to say "Buy our latest Computer/TV/Newspaper/Car" etc.

By the time you get to a post that is so crass and distasteful as to try to sell daft, unproven, unscientific herbal remedies to the desparately ill (and further seeks to recruit others to help exploit such people), INSTANT DELETION is the only course of action. Repeat offenders should be banned from further posting. I believe this is already in the rules.

Unfortunately, these posters know thet if they post at weekends, their rubbish is likely to survive for a while.

I know that this is a suggestion, but I'll put it here. What about adding a "Spam Button" to the forum, similar to the "Report threatening post" button? But an antispam button could go further. If (say) 10 members think a post is spam, then the post gets transferred into a "spam bin". The spam bin could be visible - at least the post is shamed and flagged as not to be taken seriously - or it could be hidden for all except forum administrators, who could review it later.

Re: Spammers...

Dirk, we have a special 'Spam Reporting Thread' in the CA room. Like you say, we try not to give it oxygen and simply report it there 'invisibly', same as the fresh one. This particular one looks like an opportunistic, first offender who needs reminding of the rules and the delete method applied.

It's also that one or the other CA is on the board any day of the week as well as technicians checking up in the CA room during weekends, thus it's not likely to last long.

For members, simply dont even mouse-hover over any (suspected) advertising links if not sure of the origins, particular if hidden behind e.g. 'go get it here' titles.... you might land yourself in trouble if protection is not top notch.

For those unsure on the forum rules in excerpt:
  • Please do not use World Community Grid forums for outside advertising or marketing of any kind

Think it's plain and simple to understand for even the not native english speaker.

Unfortunately, there are some people who speak English as their/our only language that still haven't figured out the meaning of: No, Not, Do Not, Don't, etc.

Nor do they appear to have any interest in learning what those words mean! shame on you
