confused loss of cpu time during communcation

Is there a way to have BOINC to allways have a work unit waiting to be processed so there is no loss of cpu time that could be used for working on a work unit while communicating with the project ?

Re: loss of cpu time during communcation

If in the 'Activity' menu 'Network always available' is selected and internet is up, you should get a new job before the current one is finished. If you only get one job at the time, there could be one reason for not getting a new one until returning the last result, which is that the validation fails all the time. Check in 'My Grid' > Result Status (button at top of forum page) if a job is Invalid or Error. Meantime, on your next reply, provide basic details as per the 'Issue?' link which brings up a Q&A.

Re: loss of cpu time during communcation

My guess is that preferences for network usage haven't been modified. thinking

Therefore I give a short description to do this.

Click on the button on top of this page 'My Grid'. Then choose
- 'Device Manager' in the left column,
- 'Device Profiles' in the left column,
- profile named 'Default' in the middle column.
Enlarge the settings for 'Connect to network about every xx days' (to be found at the bottom of the page).

Default value is 0.3 days. So your PC will get only one WU that runs more than 8 hours.

P.S.
My settings are 3 days for the case of server outage.

Re: loss of cpu time during communcation

Hi Robert,

Good it worked out, still does not explain why no work is fetched before the end of the current job with the default setting. Can only think as a possible that the duration of the jobs you run are longer than the 0.3 days (7.2 hours) default. Only HPF2 & FAAH are longer on medium powered machines and not GC which are just 2 to 4 hours. With a profile having only long jobs the fetch instruction may not be issued in the first block.

I'll report this to the technicians as default settings should be set so as to ensure work is fetched in time.... so goes my 2 cents.

cheers
