Public PC stats?

I've been told that PC stats are not publicized because of privacy concerns. Well recently, I've had someone track down my post and stats so it's not like I'm hiding anywhere. So might as well publicize (with option to hide like other BOINC projects) the stats? Why? I'd like to see what kind of PC was the one that was really faster/slower/similar to mine in CPU Time.. And why not? smile

Re: Public PC stats?

The stats are public. The host information is not.

Like it or not, your posts are now a matter of public record. We don't mind you asking questions, but if you are so interested in how it all works, reading up on it all first would be the thing to do. That will save us both time.... :-)

Re: Public PC stats?

By stats, do you mean just the work units, total credit, or the PC stats? I see that boincstats.com has data on PC stats of all users, but not individual..

So how would you reckon I go about reading up on why host information is private?

Re: Public PC stats?

Just the work statistics.

Check the privacy policy. It doesn't address the question directly, but it's the acid test for any privacy matter.

Making details about other people's computer public is a potential risk. It's not a big risk, but it's especially important for attracting corporate networks to WCG.

Re: Public PC stats?

That's a shame. Not even a chance of seeing my work unit "partner"'s pc, without their username? I guess it is good though in a way, points are enough to encourage enthusiasts but without too much info so that folks aren't too encouraged to make clients won't go rigged like Seti, etc.

Exactly why I'd like to see PC stats. Come on, everyone else does? How about default no PC stats, but opt in? Or maybe just a bug..

Such situation is quite common for linux crunchers, if one upgraded BOINC to 5.8.15, but the other still sticks to 5.4.11not talking

It's relatively easy with a multi-project cruncher to corellate host name, hardware and user name and a little oogling and than start e.g. a flame war/harassment (and seen it more than a few times on 'full' BOINC projects). Privacy will not be given up for 'it would be nice'.

If you want to share, post it on the forum.... someone here collated a spreadsheet with data and benchmarks of different hardware.... it's still accessible.

"...or maybe just a bug.." implies u want WCG to introduce a slip of the pen thinking Do you consider it a joking matter?

@D_T_G

We're repeating this upgrade need for Linux clients wherever we can. It takes quite a while..... maybe one day when there will be an 'update' notice in a future version or the servers pushing a Notice into the message logs, will upgrades proliferate quicker.

This has option of "BOINC Show Hosts:". I disabled it after being stalked down but then reenabled to see what it did. About a day after, on boincstats.com, I could see my PC's stats. I'm pretty sure that "BOINC Show Hosts:" was defaulted to be "yes".. Or maybe not.. But point is, I don't need to manually post my stats as Sekerob suggested.

So why not just publicize directly if the data is there, I think "BOINC Show Hosts:" is default to yes, boincstats.com is doing it.
