Service Installation

Hi,
I want to install BOINC agent as a service in a few computers. A few moments ago I downloaded from here the new BOINC agent 5.8.15 and I expected to find the option to install this software as a service, as mentioned in worldcommunitygrid site , but seem that only single-user installation is available. How is this possible?

I think I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what.

Re: Service Installation

I think you need to be logged on as someone permitted to install as a service to get that option (there are 3, Single, All, Service). Am speculating as I've never seen anything but the 3 options.

Let us know and me or someone else will research this behavior.

I will try again tomorrow, becouse I'm not at work now. And I will try to install hte BOINC agent in another computer at home to check if is an installer problem or feature.

Well, my initial guess is, you're running win9x, since win9x only includes single-user installation...

Re: Service Installation

I just tried to install 5.8.15 BOINC on XP Pro with user "admin" which has admin privileges. Only option I get is to choose whether it should be default screensaver. Regardless of whether I check or uncheck, I do not get an option to install as a service, etc.

I have installed previous versions on other PCs and had no problems with selecting to install as service.

Bug?

Re: Service Installation

I tried again in other computers and the same, after selecting the destination folder the installer jump to Single-User installation. No more options are provided. All the computers are Windows XP Professional based.

Any suggestion?

Re: Service Installation

What OS please?

The download from WCG has a specific WCG skin in it... it worked for me without issue, but one can try the official none customized distribution from Berkeley themselves: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_5.8.15_windows_intelx86.exe

Will report to technicians once the OS is confirmed.

thanks and sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: Service Installation

All the computers have Windows XP Professional installed on them, so this is the OS I selected to download. I tried with the official software from Berkeley (5.8.15) and have no problems, so the problem seem to be in WCG customized version.

Let us know when all is fixed and thanks for the response.
Marcos.

Re: Service Installation

I noticed the BOINC must have done a software update. The service install option use to be there but I noticed it's gone too.

Re: Service Installation

I can confirm this is an omission in the WCG installer. If you need a service install, grab the version from BOINC for now: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
