Hi Guys,
I have just changed from the UD version to the BOINC version as I've now noted that it runs on mulltiple cores (Windows XP). It didn't ask me for a device name upon install (like the UD version does) and has given it computer.domain.com as a device name. Since i'm doing this from work i REALLY don't want the domain name to show up. In easy paint-by-numbers steps - can someone please tell me how to modify the device names so that i can call them alias1, alias2, etc? And tell me if they will then be changed on the web site? Thank you, TheFunkSoulBrutha |

All the pages with your computer device names can only be seen by you. WCG respect your privacy.
Compare your member page with someone else's, and you will see how restricted the available information is. Make sure your profile has "BOINC Show Hosts" deselected (it is by default) so your host information isn't exported to third party stats sites. Actually, I'm not totally sure that this information is exported even if you select the option - I haven't tested it. |

Yes you would see things like CPU info on BOINstats if you allow Show Hosts (forgot to deactivate in 1 project where the default was 'on'.
----------------------------------------Normally the Website assumes the Device Name of the Host Computer, so if the custodian of a computer were allowed by the admin to change it in the OS to e.g. TheFunkSoulBrutha-01 (System Control Panel, Computer Name Tab) it would appear like that on WCG after a system boot and a BOINC client transmission. It's though with proxies and other things in between that the name seen by the BOINC servers is not that name, but whatever the proxy server or ISP transmits. (See posts earlier in this thread and elsewhere on these fora for that discussion). Like Didactylos indicates, it's rather private, which is not necessarily the same at other BOINC projects where anyone knowing how, would be able to drill in and find the device names, owner and all *if* Show Hosts were activated. It shows like this on the public end for me: Number of hosts Hidden ** Traced it down to one project where the default was not 'off' and changed it.

Make sure your profile has "BOINC Show Hosts" deselected (it is by default) so your host information isn't exported to third party stats sites. Actually, I'm not totally sure that this information is exported even if you select the option - I haven't tested it. Computer-name and ip is never exported, it's only available on web-page, and only to the user himself. User-id is not exported for the host-id's, if user haven't choosen to enable "show hosts". All host-id's is exported, but without user-id it's impossible to know who is running the various computers. The info shown is: <id> <userid>NOT SHOWN IF HIDDEN</userid> <total_credit> <expavg_credit> <expavg_time> <p_vendor> <p_model> <os_name> <os_version> <create_time> <rpc_time> <timezone> <ncpus> <p_fpops> <p_iops> <p_membw> <m_nbytes> <m_cache> <m_swap> <d_total> <d_free> <n_bwup> <n_bwdown> <avg_turnaround> <credit_per_cpu_sec> <host_cpid> If there's no user-id, there's no way to tell one P4/XP from another P4/XP. Appart for sorting after Total credit or RAC, it's basically only usable for info like X% is running XP, Y% is running Vista, Z% is running Linux and so on, and M% runs Amd while N% runs Intel... ![]() "I make so many mistakes.
