When I was running the UD client in Windows, it allowed me to enter a device name which shows up on the website when. Now that I'm running BOINC on my Mac machine, there appears to be no way to change the name. It by default seems to appear as the domain of my ISP. Is there a way to change this?

The BOINC device name is a bit strange and not well documented, but indeed cannot be changed in instances. Normally the device assumes the name that you gave it in the operating system. Why it assumes the ISP name or makes the ISP name part of it, I dont know but may have something to do with e.g. ISP server proxies....read about this anomalous behavior before.

The BOINC agent assumes the name of your computer as found in CONTROL PANEL>>SYSTEM>>COMPUTER NAME. If you change the name there, the new name will show up here on the website after the next communication.

That will be tried (and a boot of course), but understood previously, that one is stuck with the name once it's registered with it.
----------------------------------------Added: Well it sure was an undocumented change if it was that.... did what Olympic suggested, booted, communicated and all WU in the Result Status pages and device profile changed to the new computer name...... but now i have another issue to fix.... the old names keeps pestering: 12/03/2007 14:20:57||Can't resolve hostname [tpdc-mxirnto2ft] valid name, no data record of requested type 12/03/2007 14:21:04||Can't resolve hostname [tpdc-mxirnto2ft] valid name, no data record of requested type 12/03/2007 14:21:40||Can't resolve hostname [tpdc-mxirnto2ft] valid name, no data record of requested type 12/03/2007 14:21:57||Can't resolve hostname [tpdc-mxirnto2ft] valid name, no data record of requested type 12/03/2007 14:23:52||Can't resolve hostname [tpdc-mxirnto2ft] valid name, no data record of requested type 12/03/2007 14:23:52||Can't resolve hostname [tpdc-mxirnto2ft] valid name, no data record of requested type We'll fix that later ![]()

The BOINC agent assumes the name of your computer as found in CONTROL PANEL>>SYSTEM>>COMPUTER NAME. If you change the name there, the new name will show up here on the website after the next communication. Perhaps that works on the Windows version of BOINC, but I have already set my Mac's name (System Preferences>>Sharing>>Computer Name) and the name listed on the site is definitely not what I have written there. Thanks anyway for your help. |
