Additional Projects

So a while back 2 new projects were added to the grid.
So a question came to mind that bothered me a little more lately. Why is a decision like that made? I mean you have a finite number of resources (being the cpu time users donate). Why would you spread that over more projects? This way any payoff is only moved further into the future. Wouldn't it make more sense to (in simple words) cure cancer first and then go on to cure aids?
Of course i know that i can decide myself what projects i want to contribute to. But i think directing people into one single project and concentrating computing power would show results a lot faster (obviously).
Plus getting some "real" results from the grid would shine some good light on it and give it good publicity. In the current manor you just postpone any results and make it kinda look unnecessary, like Seti@Home or finding large primes.
Any comments are welcome ;)

Re: Additional Projects

There's a fundamental philosophical difference with other mono projects and WCG. Here is offered a hosting service to any developer of a humanitarian valuable science project that needs serious Distributed Computing power AT NO COST, which otherwise would never become reality or would be seriously delayed due sponsoring/funding issues.

WCG is committed to support as many clients as can hook up... i think 10 million was mentioned at some point in time. It's all non-profit, and results go back to the public domain for maximum benefit to the greater science community.

Whilst it appears that some projects never seem to finish, FAAH for instance is readying experiment 6 whilst experiment 5 is going and as these project progress new experiments are added and whilst they are going, the technicians and projects managers steer the quantities to accelerate one or the other for optimal utilisation, which includes filling gaps if one or the other project or platform has a processing problem as has happened to HPF2 on BOINC. No mono project could do that.

Several projects were completed (see here, left margin) and as the client base grows, more could be put on... a so called one stop shop.... set and forget if you want. As you say, anyone can pick what s/he chooses as being closest to.... and as the technical support builds more and more experience, new projects can be put on stream at the highest cost efficiency and least delay.

Watch this flashcast of 6 minutes: http://www.ibm.com/podcasts/howitworks/021307...s/leadspace/all/gridflash

Several projects will come to completion in the coming months (see estim. % in the links below) and as they are completing, new once will replace them. 6 are scheduled for 2007 and a similar number in 2008.... this is how much demand there is, so go forth and spread the word.

Re: Additional Projects

One thing should be clear: The Distributed Computing Collaborative identifies and eliminates thru sophisticated algorithms *Good* and *No Good* candidates for further study in the labs, which shortens the path to find medicine or vaccines by potentially many years. The Community doing the projects is a very important step towards finding these cures, but not the last... from petri-dish to release for prescription to humans is still the final and biggest hurdle.
