I hope Dave Bell is soon on the road to a full recovery.
There must be some kind of US Army or Vietnam Vets association to help Mr Bell find the exact help he's going to need, but not everyone finds it easy to accept help from strangers, looking on it as being a form of charity. If you read this Dave, remember that charity begins at home. From the sound of it you served your country in it's time of need - now accept that they can serve you in yours. Good luck to you sir. |

LATE BREAKING NEWS!!!! ![]() Had a call from Dave Bell late this morning. He just got out and is back home in his apartment in Raleigh, NC. Only been a couple of days. He's got a few visits from physical and occupational therapists to come. Think the OT came yesterday and is getting "social services" involved. Dave's got some adapting to do and things to get use to. His old apartment really isn't suited to things like walkers, wheelchairs, c-legs and such. His neuropathy makes it difficult for him. It's hard to type much or hold things for long so while he may crunch again, he won't be able to be near as active as before. He may still move to Chicago but I think he'd prefer to stay in Raleigh. Does anyone know if any of the veteran's groups have any kind help available? It sounds like Dave could use an "advocate" to see that he gets what he needs and is due from the government (federal, state local, whatever). I believe Dave's a Vietnam vet. These first few days are going to be a bit rough on him as he adjusts and gets settled back in. Big picture, he probably needs to find another place to live better suited to his needs and diabilities. I'm sure there's more that I'd never think of but someone who's been there would. GOOD NEWS |

Wow! What a day. We did lose Neumonic from our list of active crunchers. Hopefully, we'll hear from them again soon. Spikey is back form his camping trip but he can't take full credit for the 19,000 point jump in today's team totals. It seems Ploetner jumped from their usual range for 4000-8000 points to almost 25,000 points today handily taking the number one spot for the day.
----------------------------------------![]() ![]() Regarding Dave, he literally has been home for only a couple of days. He's got a lot of things to take care of I'm sure. He was pretty sick there for about a year fighting the infection that ended up costing him a lower leg. His time away from home in the hospital and recovery took about another nine months I believe. That's a long time to be away from home. His neuropathy will make it rather difficult to do any typing of consequence along with many other normal day to day tasks. Try this mental exercise - you've broken both legs and are confined to a wheelchair. When you can stand, you have to use a walker to support yourself. To get from a sitting or lying position, you can't use your knees. When you hold anything in your hands or stand on your feet, you quickly feel a painful burning sensation but can't quicky sit down or empty your hands. Now, mentally go thru your normal daily routine. Keep in mind that your car hasn't been modified and nothing at home has been rearranged for your situation. In time, there are changes that you could make to better deal with this but that's in time. Until this, you have to cope with the present. I'm not describing Dave's specific situation but am trying to help you imagine yourself in one that would really let you relate to his. Plus, this is just based on what I know myself so this is probably a bit of a rosy picture. Getting the help and services that he will need isn't the big challenge. I expect that that will be navigating and dealing with the bureaucracy first. Someone who has been thru a similar situation and/or knows enough about the system to know where to go and what to get can make the transition back to a normal life MUCH easier. I'll see if I can't dig around online and hopefully find something. I'm open to anyone's ideas. I remember being on the Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor, imagining myself in my dad's shoes - just out of high school, never been more that 20-30 miles from home, suddenly on a boat in the Pacific halfway around the world where each breath you take could easily be your last. The debt we owe our vets can never be fully repaid but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try. |

MyOnlineTeam.
Thanks for loaning me Octavius. Once we get sorted out a bit, I'll maybe come visit your team for a while. Not that you'll notice the piffling contribution I'll make. If nothing else, you get a nudge up out of it. ![]() |
