Communication deferred
Hello. I recently built a new computer with a Core2Duo CPU running windows Vista. I have the UD agent and the BOINC agent running successfully on my other computers here, but on this one I keep getting a communication deferred error. It looks like this:

I am running version 5.8.11 and working on the cancer project. When I first installed this version, everything ran smoothly for a while. Then, I started seeing execution failure errors. I was trying to reproduce this error, and now all I get is communication deferred. And, the killer is, it defers communication for like 24 hours, so then I just sit here and wait a day and it does it again...what can I do?

Hello bhrunner,
The quota of 2 work units a day means that you have been returning errors or invalid results. Check My Grid - Results Status to see what your computer has been doing.

Just for fun, I attached BOINC to SETI@Home to see if those units get errors, and they don't.
And since I have BOINC running on some other computers with no problems, I'm not sure what to do to fix this.
When the next error occurs, I will post the error message that BOINC shows in the messages tab.

I see the graphics thread was running. Do you run the screensaver, or did you perhaps launch the graphics window from BOINC Manager?

You could try disabling the screensaver for a while; see if that improves the problem. It will also narrow the issue down when the techs come to fixing it.

I now have the screensaver disabled. This time I grabbed the errors when the tasks failed. They look like this:

As you can see, the task failed after about 8 minutes. This is usually the case, it runs for a little while, then fails. Keep in mind that I have 11 results returned - that is, this computer with this agent did successfully complete some tasks. But there haven't been any since they started failing. The specific error "exit code -1073741819" has been reported before on this forum and is associated to graphics.

It looks like the two things I can try are to disable the screensaver, which I have done, and to update the graphics drivers. I will try both and let you know.
As far as the error code, all the page says is :
There was a severe error in the processing this Result and we had a "death" type ending to the Science Application.

I'll give you an update when the project sends me more work to do. Thanks very much for your help so far.

Tried again with the screensaver set to just a windows screensaver, and updated graphics drivers. Still have 2 failures.

What else can I do?

Hello bhrunner,
Trying to think about graphics - did you select 'Show Graphics' in BOINC Manager for the work units that errored out? (My BOINC work units are all Valid with or without graphics but I am trying to pin down what causes trouble on your computer.)

I probably know the least about BOINC - Sekerob or Didactylos might be able to offer some suggestions.

At the very top of the first post it says Vista. The memory management is quite different in that OS. Installing BOINC and UD to a different partition or outside of the 'Program Files' directory has helped folk along quite well.

As for the graphics, still reading too many issues regarding the display drivers and a few still some months away from delivering certified ones.
