Memory hogs

My pages out are extremely high running the hdc wu's. sometimes 3x higher than my pages in. Looked at the memory and the one crunching now eats over 300 mb ram. Is this about right? I have 1 gb ram in my mac mini running boinc. Don't have the bucks to upgrade to 2 gb right now. Which project uses the hdc wu? Might have to disable that particular project. My iMac with 2gb ram has no problems though.

Re: Memory hogs

Hello Bearcat,
Help Defeat Cancer is our biggest application program. Originally around 1.2 GB in size, but Rick has slimmed it down so that it uses - I think 550 MB working set of pages, though it might be 650 MB. In any event it fits easily into a 1 GB computer with virtual memory to hold the non-working pages. Every other project is much smaller. System requirements are at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq

Re: Memory hogs

Here's a link to a post explaining what frequently appearing acronyms and abbreviations mean. WCG, BOINC & Other Acronyms and Mnemonics (2.0). It's in the Start Here forum.

HDC is very memory intensive: See the Systems Requirement page to see what each WCG project for the different operating systems require. A regular working size in RAM is 350mb with much larger peaks for this project. The new BOINC version 5.8.11 allows to set Busy and Idle memory limits. This will help to pause the HDC project when u are using the mini for other purposes.

Edit: Struck out that what lawrence already covered just before my post.
