Re: TEAM part 3, Vulture Central III, one of 40 vulture central teams

Now here's an oddity...I thought my new Phenom box completed Dengue modules in about half the time of Rice modules whilst on my Intel boxes it was the reverse...but my 'Beast' with it's two quad core Xeons does Dengue quicker too. Could it be that multi-core CPUs process this stuff very differently to single-core CPUs?

try to use dengue or cancer and see what happens.

and do not forget : using a Quad core wont crunch any WU faster than a single core CPU.

See it like this : It takes nine month for a baby to be born once the "Job" is done biggrin

instead of getting one baby after nine months, you get four instead. But it still takes nine months for the process.

Re: TEAM part 3, Vulture Central III, one of 40 vulture central teams

Retsof 'learned me up'. It's all down to the Rice modules which are doled out in 8 hour lumps regardless of processing power so the other modules are being done in the appropriate timeframes according to processor ooomph.
Has encouraged me to look at some of my 'veteran' boxes since I have one that is taking over a day for a Dengue task. Might be a candidate for gutting and upgrading 'for research purposes' (in case my wife reads this).

Re: TEAM part 3, Vulture Central III, one of 40 vulture central teams

Hey ho. I can't crunch any faster unless I leave my quad core on 24/7. At the moment it's only on when I'm working on it...
What are you saving it for? Mine are running 24/7.

Two other friends have Mac boat anchors. The whole machines died ... no partial replacements on those things ... all or nothing.

There are more quad cores coming in from the bigger teams, so we're going to slip a little.

you can fix a mac but if the 2 years warranty is over, you need to have some knowlwdge to fix it by yourself. I did it once to an 3G mac a couple of years ago. Was not so easy but it worked.

More Quads from other teams ? not wjen I cant prevent that - bought a P35 board for € 60, 2 GB RAM for 50, and an ATI 3650 GFX card for 68.

and I now have to chioce a CPU - I didnt ordered one yet. I think of an Q 9450 Quad.

Or any other suggestions please ? I think it could help us a bit. I was thinking of an AMD system but when it comes to money and a lot of CPU power then a Phenom seemed to me a bit overprized to me compared to an intel Quad.

Re: TEAM part 3, Vulture Central III, one of 40 vulture central teams

My Phenom Quad box was put together on a budget and the M/Board, CPU and PSU came to less than £300. Of course I did go a bit overboard with 2xATI cards so I could use CrossFire for some high end graphical gaming.
Could probably saved on the PSU if I had been sensible about the graphics but not by much. Pushes out Dengue modules in about 4 hours unless I'm hammering the box with some games when it can stretch out to 5 hours. Even at that I'm getting 12 results a day from it in a mixed project environment.

My girlfriend doesn't approve of it being on all the time..., and since she's paying half the electric... pah!
Penny wise, pound foolish. It's probably not a whole lot more for the whole day than the power surges when you boot it up...

There's also something to be said for the stability on the components on the system when it runs all of the time. How much will it cost your girlfriend to buy half of a new one? A couple of mine are cranky, so it takes SEVERAL TIMES to get the boot sequence to work correctly, but they are fine when they are running ... there's the equivalent of the day's power right there. That means a little more dust to deal with over the course of the year, but they have to be rebooted every month for Mickeysoft update day anyway. As long as one is shut off, I can blow the dust out. If lightning is threatening, I will turn them off softly, so that they don't take a hard crash.

Re: TEAM part 3, Vulture Central III, one of 40 vulture central teams

Penny wise, pound foolish. It's probably not a whole lot more for the whole day than the power surges when you boot it up...

!!!!

That really could not be less true! In fact, I shall do some simple maths to prove it biggrin

My system uses ~250 Watts whilst running with the CPU at 100%, and takes about 30 seconds to boot up. Even if it used the maximum wall-socket power output of 3120 Watts for those 30 seconds (which I can assure you it doesn't... more like about 180 Watts, in fact), that would be:

3120*30 = 93600 joules.

And in terms of normal running, the equivalent amount of energy would be used up in:

93600/250 = 374 seconds = ~6 minutes.

What power surges are you talking about? Spinning up the hard disks? That uses about 10 Watts per drive.

There's also something to be said for the stability on the components on the system when it runs all of the time. How much will it cost your girlfriend to buy half of a new one

My computer is switched on only once on any day it gets switched on at all. Once it's on, it stays on. And besides, you really have to go berserk on the power cycling for this to be a serious issue.. I've had a couple of hard disk failures in my time, but by the time that's happened I've long since bought a new drive and the data is replicated.

Re: TEAM part 3, Vulture Central III, one of 40 vulture central teams

The problem in that power consumption formula is the validation of that 250 watts usage, as seen in other threads having the same problem of "excess computer usage". One of my power supplies is industrial strength, and rated at 400 watts. That doesn't mean that that one computer is using 400 watts. I am not going to give an alternate number, because I don't know what it is.

I have three other active computers, also running at 24/7 for WCG. My bill might be a bit larger, but not obviously so.

There are a lot of base charges in addition to the actual cost of electricity. Suppose that the base charge was $40.00 and the cost of electricity was $1.00. If I double my electricity usage, my next bill would be $42.00.

That is oversimplistic, since my bill is more than that. More usage can also cause a different usage bracket.

The wattages I quoted are measured at the wall socket on a "kill-a-watt" meter. My actual PSU is a Corsair PSU rated at 520 watts. These meters are well worth spending the £10 on... it'll give you total kilowatt hours, V/A, Power Factor, etc. Quite interesting... in the last month my quad core used 62 kWh, which is about 1/5 of all the electricity my house uses in a month (bill is about £40 a month). Also, last month I was away for about 10 days, so normally it would have used more.

Anyway, you'll be glad to know I managed to run my quad for quite a while over the weekend, which might explain some of that extra processing that got done biggrin

Good man, 'damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead'

Working on a 'one in-one out' philosophy for tidying things up here. Got a couple of laptops flogging themselves to death for 3-4 results a day and I may take them offline and replace them with another quad. Neither know nor care what it will do to the power usage but I should push towards 100 per day for results.
Also got a Dual Pentium II server that desperately needs to be retired (and replaced?).

Once I've got the machines to good spec I can start running some training courses from home and expand my IT Services, well I can at least dream.
