Re: TEAM part 3, Vulture Central III, one of 40 vulture central teams

So you are abandoning the overclock then? How were you testing the stability?
For some combinations, the computer itself would not reboot. For others, Vista started acting strangely with lots of blue screens. Again, perhaps I didn't wait long enough. Even today, the disk accesses go crazy for about 10 minutes until it settles down to merely BOINC writes. In the meantime, I've started stripping out some excesses like the glassy aero version, fading, etc. which do slow things down. I think I'll still wait for SP1 coming soon before another major assault.

Yes, Courine, I know we're in it. Rank #27. We're also #5 in the Buzzard Day Challenge for all 3 types.

I added a computer but the team is doing less. Go figure. retep57 had just sent a few points yesterday, so that is part of the fall-off.

Re: TEAM part 3, Vulture Central III, one of 40 vulture central teams

It's no good, results are all over the place at the moment and I can't have that, couple of days in the past week I haven't even managed 100 results....I'm going to have to get some new hardware to put online, it's a matter of pride now.

Re: TEAM part 3, Vulture Central III, one of 40 vulture central teams

We may not see any more top 50 results for awhile because the DDD-T workunits were lengthened to be 4 times longer. I'm not sure why the points are also getting smaller. That could possibly depend on the priority given to each project. Every time something makes my list, the bottom falls off and it gets a little harder to get the next day. The new multicore machines do help a lot in keeping us in the running with the other teams. retep57 is sending a lot less than he used to, or we'd be even better.

I am padding the results by running DDD-T only, still the best project right now for results.

Even though the new workunits are 4 times longer, they are still shorter than most, and checkpointed frequently. I'm trying to get some more AC@H but they are very scarce.

The Q6600 must be a good one for overall workunits. My $800 self-constructed X2 was selected primarily for fastest single core speed due to another intense application. BOINC backs off to 0% while it is running. On the old 2.4GHz, a Foxpro7 database validation ran 8 hours. The program was upgraded to Foxpro9. It then ran 5 hours, 30 minutes. On the new 3.2GHz a database validation runs 3 hours, 50 minutes, with a second BOINC running in the background as a bonus. AMD and Intel clockspeed is not directly comparable. The Phenom quad cores are still too slow to match yours.

I found a 5% overclocking setting that seems to be stable. It was the 5% setting in the BIOS, without having to do anything manual. It is equivalent to 16x210 = 3.36MHz. Vcore is 1.42. I may do some more tweaking later with Vcore adjustments after Vista SP1 comes out. Vista struggles to load if the O/C is too high. It was a slow load, but worked.

OK. I see another setting that is worth investigating 15x230=3.45MHz. The message writer said that his black edition CPU liked odd CPU multipliers, so I will try it. Vcore was set to 1.475. CPU temp is holding at 48 degrees C and mobo Temp is 37 degrees C. This is 3.450MHz or about 7.8% O/C.
Vista and the desktop loaded very quickly, the best yet, so I can't complain. BOINC is running with no errors. Most messages say to hold the CPU temp below the mid fifties, so below 50 is fine.

My other application is a bit flaky. I may have to slow down some of the cas memory timings, perhaps. Right now it's OCZ DDR2 800 6400 CAS 5-5-4-15-T2. That is a better brand. Oops. I only changed T2 to T1 in the Bios for some recommendations. It won't even allow to get to the bios any more and loops back to the beginning load. That killed it.

Sunday morning I resumed. I had to clear the bios by taking off the case and removing the round lithium battery. A port with a cap was changed from pins 1-2 to pins 2-3 for 10 seconds. The cap was then restored to pins 1-2. OK. The default was restored. Accessibility is good on this motherboard, even with a giant cylindrical fan in the middle. Stories abound of others having to remove the graphics card to accomplish the same thing.

Changing the memory to 6-6-6-18-T2 was too much. Some invalid addresses showed up in little popups. I changed it to 6-6-5-16-T2. That one boots OK. I'll see whether that makes any difference. BOINC is still running OK. This memory, although SLI capable, doesn't seem to like T1, but others recommend the setting.

Another problem is vista related. It seems to save data slowly, which could be a problem with the other application. Other reviewers also report that this might be an early bios for this motherboard. The motherboard might be the bottleneck, not the CPU.

I see something else. I don't think I will do any critical things with the other application yet until more workunits finish. Several times, I suspended several workunits that had been running for awhile. I didn't want any workunit to crash after it had been in there for an hour while I was playing with the overclock, but wanted to limit that to new workunits. As it turned out. BOINC was fine, but I have 8 workunits in memory. That could have caused some of yesterday's problems. There is 4 Gb here, with something like 3.5Gb available, but I don't want to push it. BOINC is set to remain in memory.

Hard drive activity is intense when everything is running. I think it's the swap file/virtual memory. I need to get another hard drive to spread the load. That would help by putting the swap file over there. When the other application is closed, all I see is normal BOINC hard drive blinking every now and then.

That little backoff of the memory CAS seems to have improved things. Some database transactions in the other application worked correctly. Hmmm. Frys has that SATA300 disk drive on sale this week. Perhaps I'll go pick up another 1/2 Terabyte. The fast machine is crunching again....well at least until Thursday, when I have to go out of town for 2.5 days.
