Thought I'd get the GPU compute stuff working for Help Conquer Cancer. So... I just reinstalled BOINC without the "Protected Application Execution" tick-box ticked, and low and behold, I now get GPU jobs running.
Currently it seems to complete each work unit in 3 or so minutes on the GPU, so we'll see what that does to my daily points. I'm guessing maybe 30k or so more points per day. Anyone else got GPU units running? |

Thought I'd get the GPU compute stuff working for Help Conquer Cancer. So... I just reinstalled BOINC without the "Protected Application Execution" tick-box ticked, and low and behold, I now get GPU jobs running. If you run GPU, you have to leave a regular partition empty and run (# of cores - 1). Everyone else seems to "know this", but it caused a major problem here when I tried it and didn't do that. After a long haul, several hardware swapouts of memory and a larger hard drive and a new Win 7 PRO 64 bit instead of Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit, my fast six core just resumed computing in the regular manner, added to the original two that have been running. We might be able to sneak a few more days into our top vulture 100. It should help a little and I can do more work on new projects.Currently it seems to complete each work unit in 3 or so minutes on the GPU, so we'll see what that does to my daily points. I'm guessing maybe 30k or so more points per day. Anyone else got GPU units running? As it turned out, the BIOS reverted to IDE instead of the SATA that is in here for a weird reason and caused all sort of problems with the OS install. Changing it back to SATA solved the problem. I now have an extra set of memory, and I bought an external USB hard drive enclosure with fan so I can access the other hard drive. I don't think it was bad, as it turned out. Previously I tried running with two hard drives in the same computer, but it caused all sorts of heat problems.

Wasn't anything I could pin down as there was nothing apparently wrong. Went through the steps on both Windows and Linux but in addition to a lack of error messages there was a lack of GPU activity. Unfortunately I am working a loooong way from home at the moment and last time I was back I didn't have time to get my remote access stuff organised so it won't be until the New Year break that I get another chance to have a go. |

I donned the hair shirt of Geekdom a while back and got GPU computing running under Linux (been running GPU grid off and on for testing purposes whilst waiting for WCG to get it's linux GPU act together - I think I'm the sole contributor to the Vulture team over at GPUGrid)
Getting Nvidias drivers for GPU computing running under Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is waaaayyy harder than it needs to be to become mainstream. From memory it involved a lot of googling and reading of help threads/forums/etc, some extra libraries installation and a pile of symlinks to various other libraries before it was willing to play ball. |

Tried to get this going a number of times both on Windows systems and also Linux.....basically given it up as a bad job. What were the problems on the Windows boxes, out of interest? Haven't tried on Linux yet, as don't have a Linux machine with a compatible GPU installed. HCC is the only one running now with GPU, but I already have 2 years worth of it. Another project might use it sometime, we hope.
