Disk was dying on my linux-based cruncher, and has been replaced with a new disk with a fresh OS install. I seem to remember the boinc installation being quite tedious, and so will probably have to wait until I have some spare time. :-(

I have Linux Mint on a couple of boxes (including my 'Jukebox') and the install for BOINC was a breeze. From memory it was part of the software repository and other than my login/password it did everything for me.
----------------------------------------Will find out this weekend as I am looking to upgrade them both to Lisa (Mint 12) which is apparently still easier as a clean install than an upgrade. Oh when will the Linux Distros take that up as an important feature?  Ooops......this was meant to be linked to the comment from Fraz but guess who hit the wrong button? I have ubuntu and Kbuntu running and the install was a doddle coz I cheated and used synaptic to install from the distro's repositories. Life's too short for donning the hair shirt of unix/linux geekdom.
----------------------------------------I've been to the depths of dependency ... heck.. (gotta keep the mods happy  ) with an old SUSE distro where I spent an eternity using the command line manually installing something...actually, it may have been BOINC... only to find that another package was required before I could install it.  Which in turn required another half dozen packages,  which required another dozen..each! and so on. Well, there you go then. Both boxes upgraded to LinuxMint 12 and BOINC installed and running by just picking it from the Software Manager. If it was any easier it would feel like cheating.
Not sure if it is a different client (hadn't actually made a note of the previous version number) or just displays differently because of the Linux change but i seem to have lost the Messages tab and gained a Notifications tab. Just have to wait and see if it is any different in calculation times. |
