Periodic problem

I'm having a very intermittent problem that I can't figure out. My computer will crunch and exchange data with WGC for perhaps a week without any problems, and then suddenly I'll notice a day where I have not reported any work, and I'll double click on the icon in my tray to bring up the WCG screen, and it will not be executing. So I'll click on a message at the bottom that says something to the effect that there is a communication problem between my computer and WCG, and as soon as I click on it, the task begins to execute. I don't need to do anything else except click on that message; I don't need to reset my computer, or my DSL modem, or my router, or even the WCG client. I also don't need to do a thing with my firewall. And as I said, things will work fine for several days with my computer reporting and getting new WU's. I hate that there are days that _occasionally_ go by without my crunching. What gives? Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks.

Re: Periodic problem

Morning Bill

Are you crunching with UD or BOINC? This one really belongs in the UD or BOINC agent fora.

From what you say I suspect you are still using UD one solution would be to switch to BOINC which is more capable of surviving (and continuing to crunch through) outages at IBM and in all of the internet connections between. As for why it immediately connects and swaps data when you you click on it well the UD agent employs a backing off period if it fails to connect to stop your Intenet connection from being swamped with retry after retry. Each time it fails it adds a few more mins to that back off period. If your Internet connection has been down a while the agent won't automatically try itself all that often (often enough to get you back under way eventually) and your intervention has kicked off that process manually and caused you to get back under way.

Hope this helps

Dave

Re: Periodic problem

Thanks, David. Since you have answered the problem to my satisfaction, I won't bother reposting my question in the UD forum. Sorry for the mis-post.

I had switched to BOINC last fall, and after my computer crashed right before Christmas, I just installed UD on my new computer and haven't bothered to try to change over to BOINC yet. I'll try to do that soon.

Thanks.
