CPU not at 100%

Hello,

I have install the new Boinc agent on a USB key because I want to use this agent on my work's computer. This computer is a pentium 4 3.0ghz and it simulate 2 CPU (like a core 2 duo). The problem is that it work on 2 projects at the same time (1 project by CPU simulate). But sometimes the processus inactive is at 99%, and the project don't work. When i display the CPU courbe, it is like a mountain channel (or a wave). This appened every 30 secondes. Sombody have an idea ?

Thanks

Re: CPU not at 100%

Can you give us some more information?

Are there any errors reported in the Messages tab?

How is your profile set up?

What version of BOINC are you using?

Re: CPU not at 100%

Maybe u activated the CPU throttle on 5.8.x... if set to e.g 99% it will run about 33 seconds and pause 1. Sort of
makes me think of the Ardeche in southern France. How the CPU usage profile would look on a dual core and
the in-build BOINC throttle will be interesting.

Re: CPU not at 100%

I have the last version of BOINC 5.8.11.

You can see the error message of my Agent. But these messages were before I update the profil because it was the same that for my home computer and not for a usb key:

After update the profil, I get these messages. No error but I have always the same problem. (99% inactive about 1 seconde every 30 secondes)

The profil of my device is the following settings:

Use no more than: 0.8 Gigabytes of disk space
Leave at least: 0.01 Gigabytes of disk space free

Everything else is by default. My usb key is 1GB.

Thank you

Re: CPU not at 100%

BOINC stores its work files on the same drive that BOINC is launched from. In this case, your key drive. Clearly, there isn't enough free space.

Have a look at the disk space tab in BOINC Manager, and it should give you a better idea of how your space is being used.

Try again after a few minutes, and see if it works properly with the work profile.

Re: CPU not at 100%

Aside the space issue, one other thought on the 30 seconds and dual core. The profile default is to write to disk every
60 seconds and on dual core that coincides to an average 30 seconds. Never tried to run it from a USB key, but is
that slow to write to? The science does pause during these writing to disk periods, a phenomena acknowledged
at BOINC dev.

Re: CPU not at 100%

According to the agent, this are the memory settings:

total disk usage
free disk space 957.00 MB
used by BOINC 13.07 MB
used by other programs 12.93 MB

disk usage by BOINC projects
WCG 13.05 MB

But now I have any error message, I just have some problem about the CPU usage. Normaly, for me it is impossible that the computer to be lower than 50%. As it simulate 2 CPU I understand that 1 can be at 100รน and and other to 0%. But it must be always higer than 50 %.

Re: CPU not at 100%

Maybe it is due to the usb disk, because it is a flash disk and the flash disk are slower than sata/ide disk. Maybe the usb disk need a time to sleep (if i can say that). It can be an explaination.

confused Re: CPU not at 100%

I do not quite understand the 'simulated' part... is it an HT? If in fact 2 processes run - software wise - on 1 CPU I'd be interested how the OS handles that.

Re: CPU not at 100%

By simulat I want to say, my computer has 1 CPU, but in the task manager it work with 2 CPU. It's mono core but it work like a dual core.

In my case, my agent work on 2 units 50% of CPU by unit.

But sometimes it falldown at 1% or 4% of usage (1%for the this unit and 3 % for the second and 97% inactive).

I apologive for my english
