Reporting WUs

Is there a quicker way of reporting done WU without having to hit the update button. As I am doing two BOINC projects it can be 10 hours until the WU has been reported than when it was uploaded. Can BOINC be changed so that WUs are reported quicker.

Re: Reporting WUs

Is this what you want from My Device Profile at WCG

Do work while computer is in use? Yes
Do work only after computer is idle for: 3.0 minutes
Do work while computer is running on batteries? No
On multiprocessors, at most use: 4 processors
Project Weight: 200
Switch between applications every: 60minutes

Disk and Memory Usage

Use no more than: 100 Gigabytes of disk space
Leave at least: 0.1 Gigabytes of disk space free
Use no more than: 75% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every: 60 seconds
Leave applications in memory while preempted? Yes

Network Usage

Confirm before connecting to Internet? No
Disconnect when done? No
Connect to network about every 0.1 days
Maximum upload rate: 0 Kbytes/sec
Maximum download rate: 0 Kbytes/sec

Work time 24 hrs 00:00 to 00:00 same for connect. So how do I leave it so that it can connect and work 24 hrs a day if I require?

Re: Reporting WUs

Hello madmac,
Remember that there are 2 different servers you are reporting to. If you are always connected to the Internet then when you finish a task, your Messages tab in BOINC Manager will say something like:
Computation for task XX finished
Starting YY
Starting task YY using (application program with version)
[file_xfer] Started upload of file XX (result)

Then, much later (perhaps days later, depending on your communication schedule), it will report that the result was returned to the BOINC Scheduling server. The result is reported immediately to the Project server, if you are connected to the Internet. The task will be shown on the BOINC Manager as 'ready to report' until the report is made to the BOINC Scheduling server.

Personally, once the result file has been returned to the WCG project server, I don't care how long it takes to report to the BOINC Scheduling server.

But do you think it wise to switch projects every hour? Some of our projects have infrequent check points and glitches happen that sometimes make it necessary to restart from the last check point.

Lawrence

Re: Reporting WUs

I have always done it every hour and I am only doing FAAH here. It is the reporting bit I am asking about and wanted to know if it could be changed.Lawrence the last sentence could have been put in a better way, such as 'As some of our projects etc, dp you think that it is necessary to switch every hour'

Re: Reporting WUs

Madmac, can u edit your second post (little pencil next to post title) and also include the profile part where the contact times and memory % and the selected projects also edit the other options to indicate if they were yes or no. U Really need to read the link to the Ready to Report page of the unofficial BOINC wiki. The design of BOINC is to maximise crunching and minimise server communication.

The second task completion part, the Ready To Report, is actually a confirmation from the servers, that the data files were received in good order. Than, that confirmation is removed with some little data file being send to a different server (the scheduler) in the second step, all for total protection against communication failure. The latest versions actually flash a brief 'Acknowledged' in the Tasks screen for further confirmation, before the entry is removed.

With the FAAH jobs it is very likely this reporting takes place simultaneous with when new work is fetched, which is usually toward the end of a current job. Your connect default of 0.3 days suggests this is happening. The task report is then combined in a single contact with the servers and that can indeed be 10 hours.

If u want it quicker, switch to shorter GC or HDC jobs and change your connect to 0.1. Whether u hit update or wait for BOINC to work, the validation does not take place until all 3 copies of the quorum are returned. With a connect of 0.3 the probability of your job staying in Pending Validation is pretty high. At the end of the day, the maintenance routines are programmed to make sure that all work received is matched off and points awarded for all complete quorums. As u will have noticed it sometimes takes several days, on occasion a week and longer before validation can be achieved.

As for the 60 minute switch, the new version will not switch project until a checkpoint save for a job can be made. My Guess though is you only work on WCG jobs and FAAH in particular. Than that function is not relevant peace
