Re: WCG on BOINC doesn't free RAM.

It depends if u were using the default profile or any of the other 3. U really need to upgrade to 5.4.11 as the sciences have evolved with that versions functionality. If u change the profile u have to force a replication to the client by hitting update in the project tab, when WCG is selected in the list.

Re: WCG on BOINC doesn't free RAM.

I upgraded to 5.8.8 some hours ago.

The profile being used is default/home. There are no other profiles.
From "My Device" page:

*** Default Fri Feb 09 20:17:57 GMT+00:00 2007
*** Default Fri Feb 09 16:59:58 GMT+00:00 2007

Also in my profile:
Device Profile Name: Default
Set as Default: CHECKED

That covers my two installs of the BOINC client. So I've always been (and continue to be) default.
And yes I've hit Update several times - but as I've not changed the profile, it shouldn't be necessary anyway.

Thus I'm forced to conclude it's a bug. Thanks though.

Re: WCG on BOINC doesn't free RAM.

c648illion,

The 5.8 BOINC client will only honor the 'leave application in memory' setting if the application has checkpointed at least once since it started running. This was implemented because some science applications (across all BOINC projects) can take awhile between checkpoints (sometimes the nature of the computation doesn't make it possible to have frequent checkpoints). These applications were running workunits for a very long period of time because they were constantly starting from the last checkpoint before being able to run long enough to get to the next checkpoint. In order to help these applications BOINC decided to modify the scheduling policy to help these applications reach their next checkpoint.

You can see what is going off if you create a file called cc_config.xml ( see http://boinc.berkeley.edu/client_msgs.php ) and turn on the logging for <task_debug>1</task_debug> This will show you when the application checkpoints.

Kevin
