Re: zombie process made by wcg_hdc_tma_5.15_powerpc-apple-darwin

Depending on OS and whether configured as single/shared client or service there are always either 2 or 3 processes

1. The Eclectic BOINCmgr a GUI front end
2. BOINC known as the core client or daemon which connects 1 and 3
3. The Science like wcg_hdc_tma_5.15_powerpc-apple-darwin

Latter does the actual processing and is the one consuming all the available idle time.

i know that and even activity monitor show only 3 processes there are indeed 5
USER PID PPID STAT COMMAND
tosek 10213 1547 S /Applications/BOINCManager.app/Contents/MacOS/BOINCManager -psn_0_51249153
boinc_ma 10214 10213 S /Applications/BOINCManager.app/Contents/Resources/boinc -redirectio
root 10218 10214 S /AppStats
boinc_pr 10219 10214 RN wcg_hdc_tma_5.15_powerpc-apple-darwin 100 B23019_0044_YTMA71-107-10-21.pgm LM_filt_49.dat#LM_filt_63.dat#S_filt_49.d
root 10222 10219 ZN (ps)

as you can see process 10219 produces a zombie root process

Re: zombie process made by wcg_hdc_tma_5.15_powerpc-apple-darwin

The 'zombie' word has a very negative connotation to it, but as shows it's Mac lingo found for instance in this article: Mac OS X: What Are All Those Processes?. Quote:

"(More technically: a zombie process is one that has finished (i.e. died), but whose parent process has not received notification of its death. In order to keep process information around until the parent process is notified, the zombie's entry is left in the process table even though the process itself is gone. A bit morbid, perhaps, but since it doesn't consume resources, it's not really a problem.)"

There's also mention of it on the BOINC dev forum in context of Linux(Unix(?).

WCG/IBM do extreme thorough testing and auditing to ensure nothing rouge is happening or comes along before any work goes out.

If any of this is known to you, ignore and let others learn something new if interested.

cheers
