angry Complaints

1. Memory usage is off the charts. For me it was about 240 MB.
2. Unable to control amount of memory used. I tried changing the settings in the various configuration files laying around but nothing I changed had any effect even after restarting the client.

Re: Complaints

Which application are you running? There are a few of the science applications that do require lots of memory. Help Defeat Cancer requires the most. If you would like to participate in projects that use less memory, then please go into "My Grid" and select the link on the left for "My Projects". This will allow you to select which projects you wish to contribute towards. Genome Comparison has the smallest memory footprint for BOINC projects.

Note: Remember that these settings will take place after you click the save button and your agent finishes the work units it already has.

Which version of the BOINC client are you using? Only the BOINC 5.8 client is able to limit the amount of memory used. You can download this at:

Re: Complaints

Hello NoobieDoobieDo,
Memory usage is off the charts. For me it was about 240 MB.

The system requirements are at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq
We have several projects that use less than 240 MB, such as Genome Comparison. Go to My Grid - My Projects and select only those projects that fit your preferred memory usage limits.

Re: Complaints

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I was running BOINC v 5.4, but I'm trying to upgrading now to 5.8

The BOINC program had been loading faah modules (whatever) for computation.

I'm on a Intel 3.0 Ghz HT 512 MB RAM Kubuntu 6.10.

UPDATE : Hopefully in the future BOINC and the associated projects can provide clients which require much less memory.

BOINC uses much more memory than Folding at Home.
