I didn't do anything special to get it to run on Vista. I bought a new laptop that had Vista preinstalled, downloaded Boinic and started to download work units. The laptop came preinstalled with Symantech Antivirus software & firewall.

I'm running BOINC 5.8.11 on a computer with Vista Ultimate and have had no problems. I didn't do any special anything - just clicked yes, agree, yes, OK, yes, OK, etc. (everything in default location and at default settings) while installing and it has worked perfectly.

One neat trick is that you can install BOINC to the regular Program Files location, but have the project data stored and run somewhere else. Would that help? It still though necessitates the r/w to for instance the client_state.xml which has very high frequency. puzzled PS also read on BOINC dev, that the speed of Vista shutdown can effect whether data was saved completely and avoid corruption. The recommendation is, to be on the save side, to first close BOINC, before closing Vista.

Yep, me too ... until I had to reboot the PC ... now I no longer have Bonic on this PC. UD refuses to install ... Stops Responding at initial log-in screen as an exiting user. Vista Home Premium ... no AV, no nuthing ... no crunchin. ![]() |

Here is a quote from Rom Walton's blog dated 24 Feb 2007 at http://www.romwnet.org/dasblogce/
How is boinc going to get around the problem on Windows VISTA where you are not suppose to (and often cannot) write to the 'program files' directory? We'll be breaking apart the data from the executables using the SHGetFolderPath API. Although we'll need to put a possible override registry value for those who want to store the data on a different drive. Right now I've been brainstorming on the various upgrade scenario's. ( XP to Vista and 32-bit to 64-bit ) It is a messy problem. For the moment, the easiest work-around is to install BOINC in a different directory, such as C:\BOINC. By default, BOINC writes to a work file in the BOINC directory and stores the work units there. So it is best not to install in C:\Program Files\BOINC. Lawrence |

it's on vista home premimum, installed and run by admin, no 3rd party firewall or av. in C/program files/boinc. sorry guys........ runs like a champ. ![]() |

Hi vavega,
When people first started with Vista, they reported no problems, just like you. Then some people started reporting problems. Without my own copy of Vista, all that I can say is that some people run into a problem, some don't. I wish that someone would find out what the difference is between the two sets of users. Is it logging on as admin versus user during installation? Lawrence |
