Sounds like you want a RJ-11 Line Splitter, also called a Dual Jack Adapter. Try electronic parts stores or Radio Shack. It plugs into the phone socket and allows two phone lines to plug into the Adapter. The important thing to remember is to plug your computer into a Surge Protector with 2 phone plugs. The modem line from the computer should plug into the surge protector, then a second phone line from the surge protector plugs into the Dual Jack adapter. The reason is that electrical surges can come through the phone line as well as through the power line. That is how one of my brothers-in-law lost his computer.

Now that I have had time for second thoughts, I think that I should point out that new Christmas computers being hooked up to the Internet often need a number of security programs for firewall, anti-virus and spyware. http://www.uant.net/index.html is an interesting site that carries some free programs for all this.

Note that you cannot have both computers ONLINE at the same time with a simple splitter on a telephone line. They will both have the ability to dial up one-at-a-time, however.
If you want both computers online at the same time, you could network the two computers and share the dialup connection from one computer to the other. That is probably more complicated than you want to mess with, however. |

HELLO CompuDude you are correct i have been trying to do this and i am having a difficult time my wife has a seperate line but wont let me use it until after9pm If you want to try networking them together so both can be online at the same time I can try walking you through it, if the computers are capable of it, or I point you to some good web resources to try on your own. Otherwise you'll need to make do with one online at a time, or wait until after 9pm when the second phone line is available. |

I would need quite a bit of info about the two systems. What version of windows are they running? Do they each have network ports already? Are they already networked? Are they sitting physically close to each other?
The simplest thing is probably to buy a "cross-over network cable" and plug it into the network cards of each system to connect the two, if they are close enough. At that point the dialup connection can be shared using the built-in sharing tools... depending on what version of windows you are running. |
