Linux and PCU allways 100%

I am on Kubuntu. My client is BOINC client version 5.4.11 for i686-pc-linux.
It works well in low priority, but the CPU Usage is allways 100%.

Can'i change a parameter to limit near 50% ?

It's for the noise of a unclosed computer (CPU fan).

See other posts before you, you're not the only one asking this.

You can't change this in boinc 5.4.11. In boinc 5.8.5 you can change it.

But this version is not stable yet!

Maybe there are some programms in the linux port to control the maximum cpu usage.

I hope this was enough information

A French post with a Linux program called...... "CPU Limiter" http://www.boincfrance.org/wakka.php?wiki=MonOrdinateurChauffeQueFaire. It's actually listed on the official BOINC developers 'Add-On' list for BOINC: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/addons.php.

If u decide to use it, please report back and share your experience.

Added: The Website Profile option only works for those on the BOINC 5.8 test versions and up!!!!

Re: Linux and PCU allways 100%

Have you limited your cpu use in your device profile?

Your device profile

Try to limit your use there. Im on Debian and it works very well for me.
Now I have 100% of my cpu time with 48º C.

Alternatively you can look for settings into your motherboard bios to set the RPMs of your fan up.

Good luck! wink

Yeah...

Moreover a changelog looks interesting:

New CPU Scheduler.
New Work Fetch Policy.
CPU Capability detection.
Revamped logging solution.
Improved security for POSIX compliant systems (only implemented for the Mac)
Add support for file compression on upload.
BOINC Simple GUI.
Added memory usage limits for BOINC applications. (Check preferences for new settings)

Especially 'file compression on upload' (I have a poor quality connection, I often get 'temporarily failed (...) http error'. I consider checking 'unstable' boinc, but firt would like to hear if there are any regressions or possibility of loosing credits/points etc. ?

I would like to know my temp as well, but lm-sensors don't work on my mobo (gigabyte ga-g965p-ds3, kernel 2.6.18.2) :(

If you are using gnome, try this packages (Debian names):
- sensors-applet (http://sensors-applet.sourceforge.net/)
- libsensors3 (http://www.lm-sensors.nu)

The first one is an applet for gnome panel and this is what I use.
The second one is the library which the first one depends on.

Good luck.

Re: Linux and PCU allways 100%

I'm using KDE & GKrellm, I now how to use lm-sensors, I used to use them on my previous pc. It's just a bad kernel, i2c modules from 2.6.18.2, for a while I tried 2.6.20-rc2 and it was working. When only will 2.6.20 final be released will try it again, and if no regressions appear (with rc2 I had a few) then my problem should be gone.

Cheers, D_T_G.

Re: Linux and PCU allways 100%

I'm also using Kubuntu (6.10)

Here is how i was able to control how much cpu time world community grid consumed.

NOTE : currently the fahlimit programs sets 20 PERCENT as the lowest amount of CPU usage you can chose.

my source : http://www.blowshard.net/offsite/wcglimit-0.6.c
my program : http://www.blowshard.net/offsite/wcglimit

My files may or may not work for you.

Step 1.

Download the source code to fahlimit - a program which limits cpu usage of the program folding @ home.

Main page
http://calxalot.homeip.net/downloads/

Source code http://calxalot.homeip.net/downloads/versions/fahlimit/0.6/fahlimit-0.6.c

Step 2.

Inside the source code change the code FahCore_ on the below lines to the first part of the program you want to regulate. In my case I change it from FahCore_ to wcg_. I'm running the world community grid which choses to name all it's processes starting with wcg_

This works out really great because it makes it easy to manage these processes.

107
130
133

Step 3

At the shell / command line type in gcc -o cpuguard1 fahlimit-0.6.c
This should make an executable called cpuguard1.

If you get any errors it may be because you're missing required packages needed to compile with gcc.

Now with this executable :

./cpuguard1 -daemon -percent 20

With this program running any process with a name that starts with wcg_ will not be allowed to use more than 20% of the cpu.

You can do ./cpuguard1 --help to show functions included in fahlimit

You can use the following type scripts to load both things at once, the cpu limiting program and the client :

cd /home/YOURNAME//BOINC/
/home/YOURNAME//BOINC/wcglimit -daemon -percent 20
/home/YOURNAME//BOINC/run_client
