IIRC when I was running UDM over at grid.org, there was an option to "shut down the agent after the next checkpoint". I do not run UDM any more, just because it is something else to look at on all these computers and it rarely would do me any good as I now have a reliable DSL.... (Hope I didn't just jinx it). Further I do not know if it runs using WCG. In any case:
----------------------------------------Every once in a while when I want to reboot one of my machines for some reason or other, I usually end up just right clicking on the pill and exiting. That causes me to lose all the work that I have done since the last checkpoint. Perhaps it is an insignificant loss when you look at it individually but over time and many machines, it has to be significant. What I am suggestion as a nice feature would be that you could have an option on the right click of the icon in the system tray to "Exit after next save" and (while I am asking) "System Restart after next save". Someone else has likely already suggested this but I wanted to make sure that it got in the suggestion box at least once. Regards to All. |

----------------------------------------I am running Windows XP Home Edition and have found that if I do an orderly shutdown of Windows and let the system close the application I do not lose any work. I am not sure if it checkpoints as it is closed or if I am backing up to the most recent checkpoint when it restarts though. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 23, 2004 6:06:51 PM] |

Well Dave, i think you will lose the work that's done after the last checkpoint. But UDM does work with the WCG project so you can use that.
----------------------------------------You can also let windows go in sleep mode rather then shutdown your computer. Then windows copy's the files on your memory to the hardisk and when you reboot you'll find windows in exact the same position as you shut windows down. If you don't know how it works, let me know! Thanks for your suggestions. They make sense.
----------------------------------------Perhaps one of my greatest failings is my lack of patience (see my wife for a complete list). Since I run a dozen machines I get in a hurry when one of Microsoft's "Urgent" updates comes in and I have to go install it and reboot all 12 machines. This got me to thinking (always a dangerous circumstance). Perhaps the better solution from a user perspective might be the ability to force a checkpoint. That may make no sense in terms of the application but would be handy as pockets on shirts for someone like me. Again thanks for the listen. ![]() |

I kind of suspected that was the case. Thanks for confirming it. |
